From the Orlando Sentinel today.

Orlando raised its taxi cab rates by 9 percent on Monday, in a move that will ripple outside the city limits.

The City Council, which regulates the taxi industry, increased the rate for a cab ride from $2.20 to $2.40 for the first quarter mile, and from 55 cents to 60 cents for each additional quarter mile.

The increase brings the tab for a 10-mile cab ride from $23.65 to $25.80. At the same time, the city dropped a temporary fuel surcharge added because of high gas prices.

The city's action applies only in Orlando. But about half of the 548 cabs with city permits are owned by Mears Transportation, and a company spokesman said it would use the new rates throughout the area to avoid confusion.

The rate, which is tied to inflation, was last raised in 2007.

Orlando's cab rates remain among the lowest in major cities, according to Craig Adler, who supervises the industry for the Police Department.
