Is this (where the red arrow is) a toll booth?

I know 528 is a toll road, but I thought the booths were further west of this. The airport is just south of this off Jeff Fuqua Blvd.

There has been a recent change in the toll booths on that stretch of 528. The one you point to no longer exists.

Hmm. Well, good to know, I guess. But what are the changes? They haven't just gone to Sunpasses only/photos of licence plates, have they? Or is the toll booth just in a different place?

Sorry I wasn't clearer. The booth is totally gone. They just increased the toll at a booth further along.

Oh! That might be a bonus for me. We'll be coming from the airport and getting off at McCoy to go down Sand Lake Rd. If that's the case, I see the next toll booth isn't until after that.

I don't think that's going to help you. I think (haven't actually done it though) that they added an exit toll booth there. I could be wrong, but be prepared. I'm heading to the airport on Thursday and will try to look then.

Oh, thanks. Well that would make sense, although, one would think it would be cheaper to leave the one toll on the 528 working, rather than hire staff for exit tolls.

Also, as long as it's not a Sunpass only toll, as we will have a rental car and I don't want a surprise bill for tolls and sunpass access from the rental company.

To improve safety and efficiency, the Central Florida Expressway Authority is removing the State Road 528 (Martin B. Andersen Beachline Expressway) Airport Plaza. As of January 31, 2016, the toll previously collected at this plaza is now being collected at the existing SR 528 West Main Plaza and at four (4) new ramp plazas (see the Project Map graphic). The new ramp plazas feature both exact change and dedicated E-PASS lanes. Two (2) ramp gantries providing an electronic toll rebate have also been added.

{E-PASS accepts SUNPASS}

Thanks to @Capt_BJ for that link. From the map the OP can see exactly where the new tolls are. As noted, this was a safety issue because of the location of the old toll plaza.

This is really great information. Thanks so much for the post. If I'm reading this correctly, it's exact change only (so, coins) or the e-pass/sunpass. So, no bills? I'm thinking of people coming off an international flight with only bills, having not yet obtained any coin change yet.

With the link you posted, however, people can be prepared, as the prices are marked in there.

I read as no bills as well

sidebar ... why electronic tolls

a) electronic tolling REALLY REALLY speeds traffic. I lived in south Miami in 1999 and took the 'turnpike extension' to/from work. I spent an average of 10 minutes each day queued up to pay my tolls, often longer and I went thru two each way. When they put in Sunpass lanes, by getting a transponder I cut that wait to a minute or two, often less and this was when you still had to slow because the Sunpass lane was built from an old exact change lane. Success was such that they went the next step, removed the plaza structures that require you to slow down...A HUGE improvement that keeps traffic moving.

b) Safety ... those toll plazas were often the location of HUGE wrecks and more often fender benders that screwed traffic more as people fought for the 'faster lane' ..... I miss it NOT. They too the airport plaza out because it was the old style and I suspect there just wasn't land to build the new style with the pay stuff off to the right ... which is wider but safer. So this exit ramp stuff was a compromise solution so as to not lose the revenue of the early exits .....

YES, if FL did not have toll roads we might not need SUNPASS .... but we gots no State income tax!!!!!

At present, there are no prepaid-only toll plazas in the Orlando area. That may change, but for now, you can pay cash for tolls on all roads in Orlando. (Not all exits are manned, though; several have change baskets only.)

IME yes . . . that works fine

btw .. from the turnpike web site (since I got in an exact change lane yesterday and ended up sitting and sitting and waiting and waiting behind . . . )

At exact change lanes, wait for the green light; if the light says red, check the coin return on the collection basket. Damaged and foreign coins will be returned. As long as you have deposited the correct number of coins, even if the light stays red, continue through the lane. Customers are never expected to pay more than the posted amount. You will not receive a violation in the mail.

I was shocked at the people that go through the exact change lane, then get out of their car to walk over to the manned lane and ask for change, thus holding up both lanes. I saw this in Orlando a couple of years ago.
