Pam, if I remember correctly, the incentive you are talking about was offered when we 1st toured OKW in 1996. They would credit part of your hotel bill as your discount. I think it was something like half but that percentage (I also think) may have been linked to whether you were in a moderate or deluxe. We didn't use it and didn't buy until 1998. It wasn't a 150 min when we 1st toured either.
Something else, the 1st video we have from OKW talks about banking or borrowing with only 2 years worth of points. Of course now we can bank, use current points and borrow next years thus using 3 years worth of points. Our 1st BWV video allows the 3 year use. I guess DVC did this when they lowered the minimum to 150 points..........spruce

We bought in July 1993 and the minimum was 180 points plus those wonderful passes. We love our home resort OKW and bought in not caring whether the other resorts on property were ever going to be built. I too wish the Newport Beach property had been developed, but we have absolutely no regrets.

At one point there was a rebate of the money you had spent during the vacation where you purchased DVC. I don't recall the specifics since I didn't use that incentive.

Yes, Pam, we took advantage of that offer. We stayed in a studio and were given a special rate that was retroactive if we signed up.

That program was an early version of MB, where DVC would apply your WDW room charges to your DVC purchase as a credit. In exchange, some of the first year's points were returned to Disney. (Basically, if you spent $1500 on your room at the Poly for that trip, they'd provide a $1500 discount and took 150 points in exchange- if your room rate was $490, you gave up 49 of your first point allotment.)

This was later changed to the MB system of recent years. presently, there is reportedly no MB, but I would expect SSR to offer MB again once the current incentive is ended.

OK, Sherman, let's get into the WayBack Machine . . .

1) At the start, OKW was the DVC.
2) Original purchase was a minimum of 230 points.
3) DVC was competing with other Orlando timeshares. *
4) The most popular "family" timeshare was a 2-bdrm unit.
5) The 230 points was an AVERAGE full week in a 2-bdrm,
6) After incentives, it was better than off-site timeshares

7) As incentives we got
. . . 50% of our current hotel bill as credit on the purchase
. . . free 4-tickets until 1999 (almost the price of annual dues)
. . . small gifts each year (I think until 1996)

* In case people don't know, Orlando has the well-deserved reputation as the timeshare capital of the world.

For those listening to the old-timers, the park passes were for 1/2 the capcity amount of people staying in the room and were for the three major parks (not water parks or PI). A studio and 1 bedroom got 2 passes, a 2 bedroom 4 passes and a GV 6 passes. If you had fewer people in the room (like 5 in a GV) you did not get 6 passes you got 5. When AK opened it was not included and DVC members were not offered any discounted way to see AK....that was the handwriting on the wall that park passes were coming to an end.

Also, when I stayed at the GF (in maybe 1994?) on points, I got 2 park passes there as well. I think it was the next year that the resorts were eliminated from the pass program. They also offered the park passes for purchases at Vero beyond the time they were offered at OKW.

We were a little nervous about the whole thing at first, but as you can see we became VERY comfortable with DVC. Our last purchase was to have a total of 600 pts since we have 2 children (now 24 and 25) and wanted them to have enough points for their families for the future. Of course, they are still living at home with no families on the horizon!!!!!!!!! Someday.......

We think on the same wave length , we also have 600 pts (OKW-300 VB-300) and plan on our children(29+17) to enjoy many years of DVC. Our OKW pts were bought at $65 pt in Jan 99. Our VB pts were $62 + $65 when we bought them.

I was thinking that the original requirement was 170 or 180 then it was increased to 230 then later decreased back to 190 then later to 150 where it's been for some time. I have seen others post a min of 210 but I don't think it ever happened. The 270 was never a minimum, only a recommendation to take advantage of the exchange system.

I purchased in April 1994, and now I remember that when I purchased, my guide told me that the minimum was 210. I decided on 230 instead (can't remember why now!). I soon learned, of course, that I needed many, many more points and added on accordingly, over the last 9 years. I have no regrets except I would love to have my original dues!
