Orient Point to Montauk, LI, NY

Does anyone know how long by car it takes to go from the Orient Point ferry to Montauk?

are you planning to drive from Orient Point to the Hamptons and then back to Montauk? or do you plan to take the Shelter Island Ferry? and are we talking about a summer weekend or a weekday or a weekend other than during the season?

I think the drive from Orient to Montauk takes on average 3-4 hours. As rubyslipperlover suggested, it really depends on the traffic condition. You shouldn't be surprised if it takes longer. The roads on the northen and southern forks of LI are basically country roads and can easily get backed up.

Thanks for the responses. This would be mid week on a Wednesday morning late June. It would actually be going by car from a hotel in Montauk to the Orient Point-New London ferry.

Shouldn't take more than 2 hours, tops -- especially going from Montauk to OP. Montauk is 60 miles from Hampton Bays, which is only 40 minutes from the OP ferry.

That two hours is barring any construction. I've done the Hampton Bays to Montauk for a viking ferry to Block Island and that took well over an hour at 9:30 on a tuesday morning in May!

I'd say two hours is lower end, three is higher.

Late June, midweek (not Friday or Sunday), takes me 1 1/2 hours to drive from Montauk to Westhampton Beach (which is about 10 minutes past Hampton Bays). We've gone out there the last week of June each year and plan to again this year. I'm not sure where you would turn to go to orient point, do you have to go through Riverhead to cut across the south to north shore? I guess you'd be turning in Hampton Bays. If so, just the Montauk to Hampton Bays section would be 1 hour 20 minutes. I don't know about the rest of the trip.

You can take a ferry from Greenport to Shelter Island. On the other side of Shelter Island is another ferry that will drop you in Sag Harbour (I think that's where).
