I need to get the organizational juices flowing again. I used to be wonderful at this, but not lately.

What are your favorite websites for organizational ideas?
What are some creative organizing ideas you have used?

Let's share! :goodvibes

I bought a cheap plastic white turntable at Walmart. They are where the utensil drawer organizer trays are. I use the turntable in my fridge as a lazy susan for butter tubs, sour cream, yogurt. It saves things from being pushed to the back & forgotten about. :thumbsup2

Great idea with the turntable... I am going to use that !!! However, I am not too oraganized, and can't think of an idea to share in return.

Clean out that fridge once a month! It won't seem so overwhelming.

Give yourself 15 minutes a day to organize- you'll be amazed at what you can do in 15 minutes.

Have a catch all kind of container in everyroom. So you can just grab a basket or whatever and put that stuff away.

Websites? don't know any on organizing so I'll be watching this. I do buy stuff from the Container Store.

What I have learned over the years is that you can spend all kinds of money on "getting organized" but if it isn't a natural process for you all you end up with is more junk to organize. The best thing to do is go room by room and arrange things and assign a "spot" for those things. Take the kitchen, clean out the fridge, pantry, cupboards--take EVERYTHING out (wipe things down because you have everything out), toss what you won't use or give it to a food shelf if that is possible, then put everything away in a spot and just keep doing that.

Sort through closets, etc and do the same thing. Usually people that need to "get organized" are bad at throwing away stuff. Memorize the motto--"If I haven't used it in the last year, I don't need it. If I need it later, I can buy it again" (which you will never do).

I'm not sure I have any great organizing tips, so to speak, but I can tell you a little bit about my recent experience. I have spent the better part of the last two years (in my spare time) updating my house in preparation to sell it next spring (painting, fixing up....the list is a mile long frankly). Organizing isn't too difficult if you don't have that much to organize. I'm still in shock over the amount of "stuff" I had accumulated over the years and there's no way I wanted to move all of it to a new place. I've had garage sales, given stuff away, repurposed things, etc. You just have to take a long, hard look at what you have and decide what you need and don't need. Once gone, it's obviously easier to organize what you have left.

The 15 minute a day clean-up idea is one I've used for a long time. As the previous poster said, it's amazing what you can do in 15 minutes. When my kids were young, we would do this once every few days -- me, husband and two daughters. Fifteen minutes with the four of us gave us an hour's' worth of picking up and cleaning. And it was not a hardship on any one of us.

I also live by the rule of never leaving a room without something in your hands. If your shoes are in the living room and you're headed to the bedroom, pick 'em up and take them with you.

I did repurpose a shoe holder into a tool holder, which I thought was a pretty ingenious idea. It's one of those shoe holders that's a rectangular piece of some kind of fabric with pockets on it. I hung it in my garage and I keep all my small yardwork tools in it, as well as my garden gloves and my old shoes that I wear for working in the yard.

I also repurposed another shoe holder (what is it with me and shoe holders? :lmao:) that I keep in the basement to hold my paintbrushers, rollers, painter's tape, paint stirs, etc.).

After I redid my kitchen, I reused some of the old kitchen cabinets. I put a couple in the basement to hold laundry supplies, and I have several in the garage -- one for car cleaning supplies, one for pool supplies, and another for yard stuff (the stuff that doesn't go in the previously mentioned shoe holder).

The major reorganizing project I did during my house renovation was to install closet organizers in all of the bedroom closets. I bought Rubbermaid closet organizers (at Lowe's, I think), and I sprang for a couple of the "extras" like pants hanger and baskets. I love my closets and it's made a world of difference. (I don't have any shoe holders left though, so my shoes are tossed on the floor of my closet. ha!)

A lot about organizing is really about lifestyle. You just need to determine what works for you. I am not an advocate for buying expensive containers at someplace like The Container Store when a cheap container from WalMart will work just the same. (Don't get me wrong -- I love The Container Store.) But, there are a lot of great organizing/container tools out there and they do make a difference.

Sorry this was so long. Good luck to you.

Debbie

The shoe holders in the garage is a GREAT idea!!! We use a shoe holder for hats and mittens (hung on the back of a closet door in our mud room.

I too have a shoe holder hanging behind our coats on the coat rack at the front door. It has hats & mittens in it.

Thought of another one. We raised the rod & shelf in our closets, and added another wooden rod below to double our rod space. In one closet, the lower rod only goes half way across so we can hang longer items & have some shelves under those longer clothes. We found doing it this way was cheaper than any of the cheap closet systems out there. We just needed to measure the length of our clothes, and decide what was the best height for each of the rods.

I do agree with getting rid of things. I think its just we've lived here toooooo long & have finally used up normal storage space. If we were moving, I know we would be more brutal about what we get rid of.

I hung a plastic shoe organizer in my walk in closet for misc. stuff that doesn't have a place. LOVE IT! Now those stupid little nothing things that accumulate between the 7 people in our home, has a place.:woohoo:

Great idea about using one for the hats and gloves...Im gonna do that one!
