Oreo Truffles....YUM!!!

I usually leave them in the freezer until the day I am ready to serve. Then I put them in the fridge to soften up a bit. I only leave them out to serve 1 hour-2 hour tops before back in the fidge.

Unless you have refrigeration or will eat them within 2 hours I wouldn't include these in any exchanges or cookie platters.

<sigh> That's what I thought....well, there goes that idea. ;)

My recipe calls for essentially 3 sleeves of oreos. I use a food processor to crush mine because I couldn’t get them ground fine enough any other way. I cut my cream cheese up in to smaller pieces & drop that into the food processor too. I continue to pulse until it forms a big sticky wet ball. I refrigerate the dough for about 30 minutes before trying to mold them into smaller balls for dipping. Being chilled makes them easier to handle.
I’ve dipped mine in almost bark and in milk chocolate before. The almond bark seems to “hold up” the best, but the milk chocolate really makes them melt in your mouth. My friends & co-workers request this treat every holiday & I’ll be making them this weekend. I sometimes go the etra step of drizzling some melted white bark over the top in a zig-zag pattern and serve them on a tray with chocolate covered strawberries. It makes for a totally pretty presentation!

Also, I've left mine unrefrigerated for more than a couple of hours and no one got hurt. :)

How many oreos will I need to make 16 dozen?
Or maybe a better question is - how many does the original recipe make? I can figure the rest out from there. :goodvibes

Unless...they DO require refrigeration after they are made, and if that's the case, maybe I'd better head back over to the "cookies from cake mix" thread :thumbsup2

I would still make them for my family, but I don't have a way to refrigerate 16 dozen of them at work.

Remember, you have to factor in 16 dozen plus all the Oreos you will be eating while making the truffles.

Yes, they need to be refrigerated.:cold:

And yes, that Cookies from cake mixes! Also: BISCOTTI and Cookie BARS thread is one great thread. :thumbsup2 :rolleyes1

Recipe......

39 Oreo cookies ground into a fine powder

8 oz. of room temperature cream cheese.

Mix together and form into small balls.

Chill for at least 30 minutes.

Then dip into melted chocolate....any kind you like. I generally do some with dark chocolate and some with white.

You can mix in various flavoring extracts and top the truffles with sprinkles, more crushed oreo, crushed candy, coconut....anything you want. They lend themselves to adding flavorings, as so many flavors go with chocolate.

As Feralpeg mentioned you can also use different kinds of cookies....but if they are larger than oreos, you may need to adjust the number of cookies you use to get the proper soft texture that these truffles have.

Enjoy!!

Linda

:thumbsup2 thanks...Gonna give it a try!:yay:

My 2 favorite things are Oreos & Cream Cheese!:goodvibes

ROTFL!! So true! Plus the ones my kids would eat!

And that's what I was afraid of about the refrigeration. I'm sure a couple of hours would be fine, but eight-ten would likely be pushing it...

I'll make some for the family though. :thumbsup2

Here's what I've always wondered - do you have to remove the filling from the Oreos before crushing? Or do you just crush them whole?

I just saw this thread and busted out laughing. We make thee sometimes. The fist time we made them, my son was probably 3 yrs old. He watched us make them while trying to eat as many oreos as he could get. He LOVES them. The whole family now calls them something that only a 3 yr old boy could come up with: poopie balls! :rotfl2: He is about to turn 7 and we all still call them that. He has been asking me to make them for the past couple of weeks. Sorry if some of you think that is gross, but it is a hillarious story in our family.

I'll admit, I do not refrigerate them after they are made, but I do keep the in the garage (I live in NJ and it's pretty cool here right now). They always have a little chill to them if you eat one right out of the bag from the garage!

I think I will be making a batch for my Christmas party at work on Tuesday and then I have to make another batch for dd's team party at the gym on the 20th.

YUM! :thumbsup2

Crush 'em whole!

For other previos posters who asked....you can also crush them a few at a time in a blender. I use my food processor however.

My Dad and brother began calling them "Gorilla Balls" shortly after the first time my Mom made them. The name just stuck and that is what they are called in my family. I love being silly like that.

I make these as gifts for all of the boys' teachers and coaches. Everybody loves them. I mix semi sweet chocolate with heavy whipping cream to dip them in. I have never tried almond bark. I have tried them with Nutter Butters. It just didn't work out, way too dry.

So when you give these as gifts do they know or do you tell them they have to be refrigerated? I really wanted to add these to my cookies this year but fear they need to be kept cold due to the cream cheese and in your case the whipping cream.

What do those of you that make these think?

I keep mine in the freezer until I hand them out. This way they they are fine until the person gets home. I do tell them to refrigerate them. I know that at my boys' gymnastics, dance, and Kung Fu schools there are refrigerators for the employees.

Not sure why it is 39, but that is what my recipe says. Maybe 38 makes it to soft and 40 too dry. It IS pretty funny when you think about it!

I just tried doing them with lemon sandwich cookies today and white chocolate. Very very very good! The new peppermint oreos are awesome as well.

We made our first batch of the truffles today..........YUM!!! This recipe is a keeper for sure!
