Ordering modified items at Be Our Guest

I'm really shocked (and yet, from my experience over the years, I shouldn't be) by some of the replies on this thread (and I didn't see some of them that have been clearly deleted). I'm not a doctor, but one potential diagnosis this sounds like is this one: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28537947/

I'm a notoriously picky eater; not to the extent of having sought a formal diagnosis or that OP's husband sounds like he is, but still particular. There's one event that DW and I have an obligation to attend each year, and while there are large quantities of food (there's roughly 30-40 people in attendance), I won't eat any of it. DW has expressed concerns on multiple occasions in fact that I would rather not eat for the 16 hour entirety of the event (and sometimes we wake up late enough, that we do not even grab breakfast before the start of it), and encouraged me to find "the least objectionable food" there (I swear it sounds like Sheldon's "least objectionable activity" friendship board from The Big Bang Theory every time DW says it), and my gag reflex kicked in as I started to try to eat it.

With regard to OP's question, I don't have experience with the mobile ordering, so I can't speak to that side of it, but I've had very positive CM interactions with reasonable substitutions. I've not had breakfast there, but I have had lunch there, and while your mileage may vary with the particular CM, I've been successful at getting most ingredients I haven't wanted removed, so long as they're not pre-mixed, which shouldn't be the case with this particular sandwich. Also, a lot of times I've been successful with cheese substitutions (in case it's not an objection to cheese in general, but just brie in particular, which I also don't tolerate well). If meats are more his thing, I don't know if you have had successes with charcuterie boards in the past, but theirs looks delightful, and just wanted to offer it in case you missed it.

Good luck on your journey. The Be Our Guest restaurant has become a memorable part of every trip for us.

I agree with the PP who describes this as enabling. I don't care what diagnosis you label the food aversion with. A grown man should be able to easily order (or not order) a food item in a restaurant and deal with it himself.

Food aversions can be overcome with practice and self-discipline. My son is on the autism spectrum, and when he was little, he'd throw a tantrum if the chocolate milk came in the wrong color container. Feeding him was often a challenge, especially when I later had to put him on a very restrictive diet. But he overcame his strong aversions & preferences with practice and compassionate discipline. I did not enable him, and now he is a fully functioning teen who can order a normal meal anywhere without an issue, and he doesn't need his mother (& later on he won't need his wife) to manage it for him.

You may know this, but your DH could just skip food at BOG entirely if there's nothing that really appeals to him. You don't have to order anything. I rarely eat breakfast and usually just get a coffee at BOG while my kids get an entree.
I was going to suggest this also. Everyone at the table does not need to order a meal. It is a QS in the morning and they will bring a huge plate of pastries with the other meals. You can also most likely modify your order when you check in. Even with the mobile order they will confirm everything before you are seated so I would definitely still do the pre-order. Have fun!

I don't think I saw anyone mention. Now I haven't done the breakfast pre-order since they started but for their lunch options, the items that seemed allowed for modifications were limited. like maybe the sauce and arugula for the sandwich I ordered. Not a whole lot but it could be a starting point.

Okay, yes, it's probably to the point of being diagnosable.

No, he doesn't throw tantrums or otherwise act like an irresponsible adult (unless you cut him off in traffic, and that's a separate issue). IF it had been tackled when he was a kid, this might have been less of an issue. At 55, what you see is what you get for the most part, and he has a)improved a bit over the years, and b) tries to be flexible within his parameters, for example by doing things like trying to eat in a restaurant that isn't an easy choice, menu wise.

He never whispers anything to me or anyone else. He orders his own food when it's straightforward (like Chicken parmigiana, which most places make to a fairly strict formula) or a simple swap like rice for potatoes--if he needs a lot of substitutions/modifications, he'll often tell me roughly what he wants and have me put the order in/inquire if it's possible. This is like me asking him to get stuff down for me, rather than trying to fish items down with my cane, since while it's not the whole purpose of marriage, one of its joys is that spouses play to each other's strengths and weaknesses.

I posted because I knew that I would need to put in a complicated order, and wanted some feedback on the way to best do that without making things needlessly difficult for either us or the cast members, not suggestions for making my husband fend for himself in a situation where he'd prefer my help (and without it, would probably skip something he would like to do).

That is a hefty use of Signature Dining Plan Credits, just so he can sit there and watch you guys eat.
It's a quick service credit for breakfast fortunately, and hopefully he'll get enough food out of the modified sandwich not to make it ridiculous.

Oh right, breakfast. Okay well maybe also plan a snack stop in the near area, so you don't have too much Hangry Husband going on :) check out one of the many maps for the restaurants and find something for Plan B if nibbling at the tray is not going to fill him up.
