Are the only options to upgrade to one of the silly reservation needed annual passes or just buy additional day tickets? We'd like to spend 7 days at the parks, but don't see any reasonable way to do it.

Are you certain you need that many? DL is very doable in 5 days... I know some people will stay longer, but for me, I'm done after 3 full days and a half day on each end for travel. If you want to be in SoCal for longer, you could consider taking a couple of "non-park" days, going to one of the wonderful beaches, or doing Hollywood touring, Universal Studios or Knott's Berry Farm. Or even just a "pool/relax/ Downtown Disney shop and dine" kind of day in the middle, to refuel and refresh.

We went to Disneyland last year for the 1st time. We spent 5 days in the park and could have done more. We did everything obviously, but as big Magic Kingdom fans, Disneyland Park is a dream come true. I LOVE dark rides. We must have ridden all the Fantasyland rides 6 or 7 times each.

A 5 day and 2 day tix are $675. If it was me, I'd buy the 5 day ticket then upgrade to the Flex pass on the 5th day and reserve your 6th and 7th day. THAT SAID, this doesn't work over Christmas. And then you plan another trip for early next summer!

We would do the park hopper with max pass so it would be between $800 - $900.

Maxpass is a $100 add on to an AP. I would do the 5 day hopper with Maxpass added directly to the ticket at the time of purchase, that way it goes toward the upgrade to AP and then upgrade to Flex with Maxpass.

What are your trip dates? Sometimes there are discounted tickets that only require some minimal event participation, e.g. Dapper Days. Buying DD Expo tickets would allow you to use the convention discount for tickets. That could help cut some costs if your dates match up.

Why would you wait until the last day to upgrade to flex pass? Buy it right off the bat and get the discounts that come with it. Why waste 5 days of discounts by waiting until the last day?

Because you have to make reservations for each day. You can only make 2 in a 30 day period. So, they would have to make 2, then remember to make the next one when they check in to day 1, etc. Yes, you can do it that way. And depending on the calendar, it might be even easier to just buy the flex.

Lol - Reservations for passholders to get into the park. No thanks. We'll just stick with 5 days and go to Universal Hollywood for 2 days. It's as if Disney is trying to help Universal. WDW lost is completely to Universal Orlando. Hope Disneyland doesn't go down that path.

I dont think i could personally handle 2 days at Universal. I am bored halfway through. Just to many motion rides for my liking. The Harry Potter area is fantastic however. The rest is so so IMO.
I agree and I am a Universal fan, but the one in California doesn’t have enough attractions for me. After Universal Orlando, California isn’t worth the effort to get to.

I considered that until I took a good look at the Universal Hollywood site, and then I went back to Disney and bought Deluxe APs. (I’m not sure that I would like the reservation uncertainty as crowds pick back up.

The reservation system isn't as bad as it seemed, and depending on when people go, M-Th is open with no reservations. I have friends who got this one and they are loving it, but figured when it picks up, they will just upgrade. I doubt it will be a hassle til next year.

These are my thoughts. We have never been to Disneyland before. We just spent 11 nights at WDW on a 9 day ticket with young kids. Having the flexibility to leave when they needed it and knowing we could do the ride the next morning or afternoon was the best experience for us. We also really loved the flexibility of just going to the park for dinner and a few FP+.

I could have wrote this. We just got back from WDW on a 9 day ticket. While there I decided I wanted to add two extra days to do the evening EMH at MK; cost for 4 = ~$80. To add two extra days at DL I'm looking at ~$800!!! It's hard to swallow that difference (we won't, we like you will just visit another park).

There is a $240 increase if you went with 4-day park hopper tickets with MP + 3-day park hopper tickets with MP (instead of a 5 + 2) , but with that combination you get two Magic Morning entries instead of one. With an AP, you don't have any Magic Morning days unless you were using Early Entry by staying on-site, and the Deluxe AP cost is more than any park hopper combination.

IMO I would only do the AP option if you plan on returning again for another trip next year.
