Optimal Time to Convert Tickets to Annual Pass?

Hey there. We were considering getting out of state annual passes and I was trying to decide on when. I am pretty sure I've seen that you can roll your recently used tickets into the cost of an annual pass, but I wanted some opinions.

Right now we have an October reservation that includes onsite room, 2 days on a ticket and the dining plan. Since it's so far out, the room is currently rack rate.

What do you think is my best option for cost benefit?

When I got my first AP I rolled my ticket package in to an AP, you just pay the different between what you paid for the tickets and the AP cost, and it was super easy. My DH has never had an AP, and with at least 2 trips after our next scheduled and in the works we've decided to do the same for his. You just have to use your ticket once and then upgrade before you use your last (I believe, I know you have to use a ticket first). I actually did it again this year when my AP lapsed and both times I went in to the park on my first day and then stopped by Guest Relations on my way out to upgrade; the first time I did it at the guest relations outside of MK, the second time I did it at guest relations inside the park. I like to do it this way so I can start using my 20% merch discount, and 10% off TS.

You could always call and see if you can get a room package with just the room and dining plan and purchase an AP voucher if you are sure you want an AP, or just do it the easy way and upgrade when you get there. There is no guarantee there will be any good discounts for a while so I wouldn't bank on there being an AP discount since those aren't guaranteed and only used to fill rooms. Either way it costs you the same money, it's just kind of like you've pre-paid for some of the AP ahead of time, they already did a price increase right before the shut down so you won't be in danger of another one any time soon and you'll likely come out paying the same.

Are you on free dining? That might change the calculus
Yeah, I didn't think of that myself. If doing free dining where you have to have the tickets with the package deal then you really can only upgrade once you get there. Not a big deal though.

(I believe, I know you have to use a ticket first)
Nope.
You CAN, but it is not necessary to do so.
It does not affect the cost or ability to upgrade.

The first time I did it I tried to upgrade before and was told I had to use it before I could upgrade. Of course they could have changed all of that in the last several years, but when I did it again this past year I was hearing the same info from the boards that you had to use it once. It does not affect the price at all, they take the cost of the entire purchase of your ticket package no matter how many days you've used, in that sense you could use 9 out of 10 tickets and still pay the same price as if you used 1 out of 10. I know you can upgrade the tickets on the app now, which is even easier, but you obviously don't get your AP card immediately when you do that.

If you have a package, you cannot upgrade the tickets prior to arrival. But the tickets do not actually have to be used (as in entered a park) before upgrading. Non-package tickets can be upgraded in advance of arrival.

Merch discount for sure.

I was also thinking, if i'm on rack rate now... I could save with the AP room discount if i change it before we go?

If you changed before you go you could if they release one. Of course right now we have no clue if they'll do that. Usually by now we would see late summer discounts but there is nothing, so there is no clue if you can guarantee that during the current situation.

I believe you can book an AP rate by calling, and then upgrade your tickets on arrival. Having the AP in advance is not necessary. Instead of package tickets, have you priced out tickets from someone like Undercover Tourist for a savings?

We liked having the option to make payments. And we got the dining plan as well, so it was required to have tickets on the package.

Edit: The savings on a 2-day ticket did not make sense either. they actually recommended to buy from Disney.

You can book room+dining, without tickets - just have to do it by phone not online. But if you want to make payments towards the tickets, then yes a package is necessary. No discount that way. I'd watch for package offers and see if you can get one applied to your reservation.

Thanks for the info :)
