Oprah, Bill Gates, etc. (NOT judging them!)

Please stop. I never meant to start any trouble. I have to leave for the weekend and would like to just let this be over. Have a nice weekend everyone. :)

I wasn't really referring to you as much as the societal opinion which often seems to be that the wealthy are obligated to donate to help those less fortunate. Perhaps they should and it is nice when they do but I don't feel anyone is obligated to give to charity.

I was sort of anticipating where this would go from past experience but didn't feel like wasting time reading the whole thread.
Once again, I agree with FireDancer. It's no one's business what people, even those with enormous resources available to them, do with their money. I guess that's one of the reasons this thread turned as ugly as quickly as it did.
Please show me where anyone suggested what private citizens should donate?
If you read further you would see *I* did not think they *owed* anything. It was pretty much a hypothetical question.

Well, you edited your first post, but I suspect it was pretty much like your subsequent posts:
They have given very large amounts to causes in the past, just think how much they could help.

These are generous people who have made a huge difference in the lives of so many, I just think they could literally move mountains at this point.

When Oprah built that school she certainly didn't keep it quiet. When Bill Gates funds those scholarships he doesn't keep it quiet. I'm not saying how much they should give, it was just a thought that crossed my mind this morning.

Edited to add: I should have been clearer with my question:

I wonder how much they will be contributing to the Haiti relief effort?

I am not saying they HAVE to contribute, or they SHOULD contribute, or that it is any of my business. I was thinking that they have incredible resources, and in the past have proven to be humanitarians. SO, I was just thinking about the vast amount of help people in their position could provide.
It just seems as though you were saying what they could do because they're so filthy, stinkin' rich that if they didn't do what you thought they should do (donate money to help Haiti), then they were just evil, money-grubbing, despicable people.

At least, that's how I was reading it. I could be wrong. :confused3

I haven't read any of the posts so I wouldn't get mad but both the Gates' and Oprah donate millions and millions of dollars to various charities each year. The Gates Foundation is the largest philanthropic organization in the world. If they give to Haiti, great, if not, they do a LOT of good elsewhere.

  Have a great weekend snapppyd!
