Hi there! I've not been here much (because I'm not currently planning a WDW holiday sooner than "one day" ) but all of a sudden over on the scrapping boards, someone mentions a special scrap break at WDW Yacht in 2008 at the end of August. I explained to DH how enormously cheap WDW is end August as all the US kids are back at school, and he almost agreed maybe we could go perhaps might as-long-as-we-don't-have-any-other-holidays-that-year:rolleyes1 We'd probably stay one week along the Gulf of Mexico (Captiva? Sanibel?) then drive to WDW for another week (the scrap is over Friday-Monday). Couple of questions:

Hurricanes - should I worry? Is it enough of a risk not to go?:scared1:

Heat - really unbearable? I can resign myself to mad woman hair but if its too hot to do anything it could be miserable (of course, I'll be scrapping in aircon;) )

What to do to keep DH, DS(14 by then) and DS(8 by then) amused while I'm scrapping? As I don't swim, waterparks and possibly Discovery Cove look like options, possibly Believe it or Not. Any other suggestions?

If this doesn't come off then we're looking at DLC the year after, possibly with Las Vegas. But can I wait that long?

Thanks for your help!:goodvibes

An awful lot of people DO risk it. You could go in October instead and STILL get a hurricane - there are patterns to weather, but at the end of the day it can be very unpredictable and you can never gaurantee good weather. Personally I wouldn't let it stop me (have been to Florida and the Caribbean quite a few times in August - no hurricanes YET), but it is something you have to decide for yourself.

Different people have different levels of "unbearable" - personally I like the hit, providing I don't have to work in it. You have to expect temperatures in the 90'F+ (sometimes in the 100's) and very high humidity. It is incredibly important to stay hydrated (and ensure that your kids drink lots), to cool off regularly (shade, air-conditioned areas and swimming), alos watch for signs of heat-stroke (especially in the kids). If any of you are feeling feint, nausseas, headachy, grumpy or irritable... get out of the sun/heat and sit quietly with a drink

As for hair... if it is long tie it back/up, if it is shorter (a bob or something) then where a cap/hat during the day. Buy some hair straighters in the US and use them in the evening. That is what I did and I was fine.

How long are the scrap booking sessions? You must be very dedicated - I couldn't spend 5 days in Orlando doing that: too much else to do there ;). You can scrap book at home, but you can't do everything else Orlando has to offer at home...

It probably depends on how long your scrap booking sessions are: if you are in them all day (8+ hours) for 5 out of 7 days, then let them do what they like: I don't think that it would be fair to restrict them do the things that you aren't interested in (like things involving swimming). Maybe you could ensure that you always do everything as a family first, but that your DH and DSs could revisit any parks they wanted to whilst you were scrapping? If you only spend an hour or two a day doing scrap books, then that is different - easier to fit things around :)

Really you want to ensure that DH and DSs enjoy the trip as much as possible and ensure that they don't feel that they are just fitting things around your scrapbooking too much (or waiting for your scrap booking sessions to end so they can do what they really want to do...) - the more they all enjoy it, the more likely they will want to go again soon :). Will require some careful planning, I think... :)

dh ds8 and I went mid to end august 2006 and although hot it was bearable with the usual preparations, sunblock, shade when pos etc. We had rain most afternoons but it did'nt spoil it. The longest we queued was 20 mins, although we did make use of the fastpass. I understand it is busier now due to the free dining.

Although the scrapping is on for 4 days you don't have to do the whole four - you just book for as much or as little as you like, and you can come and go all day. There's a bunch from the scrapbooking forum looking at going so if we can all cross over on one day we could have a DIS-meet and do a bit of park stuff, go scrap when it gets hotter and then maybe do something in the evening. So I'd probably just do the one day. Apparently all tools are provided (so i don't need to bring a load from the UK!) and I thought I could buy an album etc. in my first week and scrap the first week's photos while the boys do Discovery Cove, then I've already got one fantastic souvenir to bring home with me.

Now just need to find some money;)
