I'd love to know your opinions on the following restaurants:

1.) Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen
2.) La Brea Bakery & Cafe

We didn't like the Jazz Kitchen at all. The food was horrible and the service was just as bad. We won't be eating there again!

We love a quick breakfast at La Brea Bakery. They have a counter service section and we eat there almost every morning when in DL. They have lots of muffins, bagels, pastries, quiche, some hot foods, etc. I like their coffee a lot too!

We have made it a tradition to eat our first meal at Jazz Kitchen, we love the food, the service, everything about it. I love having breakfast at the Jazz Kitchen place next door as well. Never tried the other bakery!

What did you have that was horrible? (or what caused it to be horrible?)

thanks :)

I had some kind of jambalaya. I can't remember what everyone else had. Mine was just not good. I remember my cousins food was cold and then it took forever for them to get her a new, hot one.

The service was slow and our waiter was a bit rude. We just didn't like it!

Haven't eaten at either, but I always buy a loaf of La Brea bread when I go shopping here.

this last weekend was our first time at the jazz kitchen, and while the food was really good- the service was dreadfully sloooooooooow. I think our server had no clue what she was doing.. I could have taken a nap between her visits. I'd be hard pressed to go again with all the other choices around.

We really enjoyed our meal at La Brea. DH and i had a panini w/salad and it was yummy.

the fruit and yogurt parfaits at la brea are the best! :thumbsup2 DH really likes the parmesan crisps. I love la brea bread, especially the chocolate/sour cherry one...yum.

haven't really eaten food there though...

I've never eaten at the jazz kitchen, either, but I do like the beignets and cafe au lait at the jazz kitchen express...:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

cryssi, are they similar to Cafe du Monde (in NO)??

Definitely a "breakfast" worth having. :thumbsup2

Thanks.

yes, they even sell the cafe du monde boxed beignet mix there! :thumbsup2 Of course, I've never been to NO, but I imagine that these are pretty authentic... :)

Love Ralph Brennan's. . .really great food and service.

La Brea Bakery. . .well, it depends on what you are in the mood for. . .I have eaten there and everything was good, but I wouldn't ever say SPECTACULAR. . .lol.

This is food from the La Brea Bakery inside DCA on the wharf. These salads were really good.

Wow! Those salads look great. Thanks for posting the pics.

There isn't a La Brea bakery in CA, that's Boudin's with the sourdough bowls.

We LOVE getting lunch at La Brea. My husband gets the turkey panini and I get the grilled cheese. We hardly ever eat in the parks since La Brea costs the about same amount and the food is a LOT better.

Isn't it the Boudin Bakery? I love that place... :goodvibes :thumbsup2 :thumbsup2 Try their veggie chili...yum (and I'm a carnivore...)

My wife & i split the albacore tuna salad (the one with grean beans in it) & wished we had gotten the other one (chicken salad?).

Great (& accurate) pictures, btw. :)

I mention this not because it was "bad" but because it wasn't our thing. Lots of beans, just a little tuna, and a sour (to us) vinagrette. Granted i (we) prefer traditional tuna salad, (but it could have stood some sweetness - sugar? - to balance the sour taste). The sourdough bread was (of course) to die for.

hound :)

Jazz Kitchen was expensive but I'm a jazz listener so I got a thrill when requesting a song

I requested "Song for my Father" which is by Horrace Silver... lo and behold Horrace Silver's bass player was on bass... which was really cool because that's a pretty signature bass line jazz song.

I looked like a goof giving standing ovations for all the solos while everyone else in the place just ate their meal

Thanks to everyone for sharing their opinions. I decided to keep my PS's at both restaurants. We'll see how it goes!
