I am very new to this and would like as much info as possible. If anyone could share their experiences/advice on renting DVC points I would greatly appreciate it. PM me or email at ehwalsh@neiu.org

You should be able to find lots of info on the DVC Rent/Trade Board - I've never rented points as we own DVC but we love DVC! Good luck :thumbsup2

Worked for us, and we'll try to do it again. :thumbsup2

It isn't for everyone, however. Buyer and seller need to feel comfortable with the deal (i.e. "trust") and you sacrifice a bit on some of the typical safeguards -- such as, what if you have to cancel, reschedule, etc? As mentioned, check out the DVC board.

Like Goofy4 posted, each person - seller and buyer/renter - have to be comfortable with each other. Payment has to be discussed before ressies are made and done with so there is no conflict on that portion.

If it is a transfer, the points cannot go back into the originating account, if something goes wrong with the transaction.

For over four years now I have sold, rented and transferred points and made ressies for individuals and I have had no problem whatsoever. Several of those individuals are repeat each year. Good Luck :thumbsup2

So krdisneybound, if you were to rent points to someone, say 6 month in advance, or you have even used points to hold your own trip for that matter. They pay you, etc. But then they want to cancel a month later..what exactly happens to those points?

I just rented some and the CM at DVC (we did a conference call) said there is no penalty if cancelled 31 days or more prior to arrival. What does that mean? Inside 30 days though, the points go into holding. What does that mean?

Thanks, just trying to learn here!

If you cancel more than 31 days out, they just go back into your account. But its wrong to say there isn't any penalty. Points have a limited life, and the closer to the end of your use year they get, the harder they can be to use. For instance, my use year is April - I get my points April 1st and any unused points expire March 31st. If I book a trip for Febuary and cancel it in December, those points just return to my account - but I have to use them by the end of March - that may be tough.

At 30 days they go into holding and can only be used to make reservations within (I think) 60 days. Once again, that tends to limit their usability.

This is why some members who rent points have cancellation penalties that kick in pretty much the moment they get the check.

You can say it gets a little tricky sometimes - but when in doubt, call MS and they will answer your questions and help you understand your individual questions and needs. Their no. is 800-********. I have learned so much by renting my own points to others and buying myself from another DVC member - and glad I do it from time to time. I find myself needing more points every year. It all falls into place after a while. :woohoo: :thumbsup2
