i'm close to taking the digital camera plunge :goodvibes

i have been reading a bit on www.imaging-resource.com and found that Canon PowerShot seems to rate pretty high - any input from anyone! all is appreciated!!

especially on the shutter lag time!

I don't know specificially on that one but I have the A75 Canon and I LOVE it- Its an all around wonderful camera and its a very good brand to get into

I have a Sony so I can't give you information about the Canon, but I would recommend before you buy, hold the camera in your hands to see if it is comfortable for you to use. It might seem silly but when I got my camera, the cameras were much bigger than they are now. A bulky camera would be hard to use, and now as the cameras are getting smaller, I would think their smaller size may make them hard to use if certain things apply, ie, long nails, wide fingers, etc.

Just a suggestion. :)

I was a die hard Canon Rebel 35mm film camera person. I swore I would never go digital. I didn't want to miss those special moments because of the shutter lag time I kept finding with digital cameras I would try then return. Also,I didn't want to mess with taking the film to a machine to have them printed out etc. WELL.....until I found the Canon Powershot G6. This digital camera has almost zero shutter lag. I absolutely love it. I used it for Christmas morning, basketball games and recent nice days outside. I found that the secret it to use the actual viewfinder versus the lcd screen. I absolutely adore this camera. My husband purchased a external flash for me for Christmas and that eliminates any red eye at all. Then I purchased the HP Photosmart 8450 8 ink photo printer. Man, am I in scrapbooking heaven. Back to the camera. I can not think of anything negative to say about this camera. I even took pictures of lit pumpkins at Halloween. Without my tripod the pictures were perfect. no blurriness...nothing. The main reason I wanted this camera was for our trip to WDW in the fall of 2005. I wanted it ahead of time to practice and make sure that I liked it and that it would do everything I wanted and catch all of the pictures I wanted. We tried several before deciding on this. It was a bit pricey but I am so glad that I decided to get the G6. As you can tell I can't say enough about it and can't wait to get to Disney this fall to use it. I purchased a 56K memory card and have yet to fill it up. Also, the battery life is tremendous. I have not charged the batteries since early January and I use this camera all of the time. It is always out and ready to grab and shoot. This is just my opinion but I am a very picky person when it comes to my pictures and this camera has fit the bill. Good luck.

I purchased Canon's A80 about a year ago and have had a blast using it! :cool1: I have four children and have had great luck getting tons of awesome photos of all of them...The best feature I enjoy is the swing-out style LCD screen...No worries about getting it dirty or scratched while camera is :flower: in the case, as it closes up nicely and stays hidden...Has come in handy with some of those "creative" pictures of the kids at odd angles, as the lens swivels! I would highly recommend this line of cameras!

The main issue with rangefinder type digital cameras is shutter lag and low image quality in low light conditions. If the Powershot is fast enough for you (test one in store) then you will be quite happy with it. One of my considerations was start-up time and focusing time. You can prefocus most digital cameras to reduce lag on shutter.

Hey, Molli!

We have a couple of Canon powershots...actually we owned one and gave it to my dad so we could purchase a Canon powershot S40 (no idea what the one we gave to my dad was) My ds has a Canon powershot A400. Both are pretty good cameras for what we use them for. Typically we make computer slide shows set to music and my dd has been scrapbooking. The quality is good for that....not sure how it would be if we blew the things up to 8X10's.

We also have the HP Photosmart 8450 and I like it a lot for KT's scrapbooking. It's convenient to have the printer right here and not have to run somewhere to print the pictures out.

Dh does a LOT of research on electronics before buying them so I'm sure Canon powershots are highly rated. :) Email me if you have any questions.

thanks for all the input!!! DH and i are heading to Best Buy friday night (yes, that's our idea of a date ;)) and I will be sure to try the exposure for shutter lag time; that is one of my concerns too but i'm so glad to read all the positives!!!

I have the Canon Power Shot S50 that is 5 megapixels and I really like it!
The shutter speed and the lag time between pictures was one of my main criteria in buying a new digital. On our old digital I feel like we missed a lot of pictures witing for it to catch up w/ me. This one does not have that problem.

I am also happy w/ the picture quality.

A funny story- When I was looking to buy a new digital my DH really wanted me to buy the Nikon. He liked the way it felt in his hand. Well, I rarely go against his advice when it comes to electronice but the Canon has sound on the video feature and I thought you never know when you might need that.
Fast forward to 4 months later when we were at my Grandmothers 90th Birthday. She has had Alzheimers for a while and is pretty much out of it. Out of nowhere she started singing. Now, I have always been very close to my Grandmother and I rarely remember her singing. I quickly turned on the video feature and have a few minutes of my beloved Grandmother singing. Priceless!
