MHO If you live in SoCal, great, since most of the activities take place there, like the D23 expo that started today. For the rest of us, an overpriced magazine subscription with some neat gifts. Of course there is the merchandising aspect on the Disney Shopping website, so you get to pay a yearly fee to buy stuff as well.

Agree that most of the major events have been in SoCal but Disney is expanding D23 events to other regions (see new fall events announced). As for joining, it depends on your expectations/interests. Some folks pay $75 for one ticket to a sporting event or to the theater which lasts 2-3 hours. If you think it's worth it then that's all that matters.

We love D23...We love everything Disney, and it was worth the $75 to join...We love pin collecting, and while the prices are a little higher, its cool to get them...I have watched Lou Mongello's videocast of the expo, and people have been thrilled.....

Also, the little freebies you get are neat...

D23 was worth it to us.

To us, the poster we got for joining made it worth it. We had it professionally framed and it is hanging in our family room. That, along with the cool quarterly magazines, is worth the $75. Throw in some unique things that only members can buy and I think its pretty special. I don't have money to just throw away, either. I just love Disney and everything about it!
