Opinions needed please!!

We've been discussing it and think we'll buy into DVC at around 200 points. We really like the Wilderness lodge and would like ideally to buy there but we know that's tough to find. From what we've read here we know we should probably buy where we want to stay. But for the time being, our kids are small so we can go at off peak times of the year. So with that said, do you think we should just buy at OKW because we could get a better deal and a lower yearly fee? Do you think we would still be able to try other resorts with the 7 month window and not have a problem? One more question, we figure we'll buy more points in a couple of years, so if we bought the extra points later at the VWL, would we then have an 11 month window at that resort as well as OKW? Thanks in advance!!

The general rule is to buy points where you plan to stay the most. We own at BWV and we have stayed at both OKW and Vero, which we reserved within the 7 month window. You shouldn't have a problem reserving non-home resorts if you are going during off-peak times. If you own points at 2 resorts, you can reserve only those points at that resort at the 11 month window.

Just keep in mind VWL are for sale only as add-ons through Disney. You'll have to find a resale if you want that as your home resort as an inital buy.

The Common Wisdom is to buy at the place you want to stay the most. We didn't do much research before buying in most of our points at VB, but in hindsight we'd have bought an on WDW property resale if we'd known.

From the limited time I've been reading thse boards, it seems that the more vocal voices do worry somewhat about getting the resort they want..hence the CW to buy where you want to stay most often. Maybe I'm just wierd, or perhaps my opinion is skewed by having almost almost all our points at VB, but so long as I can get _any_ room on property through our DVC membership, I'd be Happy...or any other dwarf you can name.

My bigger concern isn' t which resort, but which room type is available and can I afford the points.

There have been a couple of VWL resales up on the websites at both brokers recently in the range you are looking for. If you aren't picky about use year, and are flexible on points (170 or 230 instead of 200), don't care if you spend $65 a point rather than $63, and don't have to buy RIGHT NOW, you should be able to find something.

Call both brokers and let them know what you are looking for. Some of the most looked for contracts never hit the web sites.

Once the contract is in hand, you may be able to add on a VWL, so those 170 points could become 200 quickly.

IMHO I think you should buy where you want to stay, because some day you will find you need to accomodate your son's school schedule... you will need the 11 month booking period for busy periods... Right now if you check www.atimeshare.com & also The Timeshare Store link found above you might find a resale package... There have been resales available recently...

I like the "Common Wisdom" phrase, jmminarik. And you're right, it is a recurring phrase because in a 40 year span, there will probably be several times where it's really important.

melk....we also really enjoy WL/VWL. I think OKW is similar only in that it presents a laid-back, quiet place to relax. The theming is much different and one is a condo-style and the other a hotel style.

And from what I hear, VWL is absolutely awesome during the heavy DVC season of Thanksgiving - Christmas. You might have trouble getting in there at a 7 month window.

Good luck....it's a tough decision, but mostly a fun one to dream about.

I agree that you should look into a resale for VWL if that is where you want to stay. VWL & BWV are often hard to get into with only a 7 month window.
