I have a 6th grader who just loves Merida. Very much like your daughter. I showed her the new version and she said yuck. It is just another superficial attempt for merchandising. She looks fake and downright awful in my opinion.
I think it was a huge overreaction, it's a cartoon not an actual person.
So what? It represents real people. Kids and Tweens look for role models in animated films as well. There was no need to change her. So happy Disney pulled it

). Let's point our kiddos in the direction of proper role models and let 'em know that the cartoons are pieces of art, not really someone to look up to, we have astronauts, politicians, and teachers for that.
Otherwise we end up with girls trying to attack people with frying pans, cutting off their own hair with a sword, and running away to live in a house with a bunch of guys. And maybe people should explain to others that cartoons aren't real people. My mom wasn't up in arms over the way certain characters I liked look as a child for example Sailor Moon. I don't understand the whole princess obsession anyway they weren't appealing to me as a child and aren't now. Why would one want to look like a cartoon?
I'm actually kind of surprised by some of the reactions. This version of her was only meant for group shot merch (kind of odd to have every single person looking different, including head sizes, and styles). There would still have been plenty of stuff with the frizzy headed princess.
I also find it kind of disgusting people are saying they made her sexy. To find something sexy (even saying other people would) means you (or someone else) would want to have sex with them. Ick. It's a cartoon of a teen. She wasn't "sexed up" or made "sexy", glamorous, yes. More regal? Yeah. Certainly not sexy.
Not like they were taking the movie and redoing it, burning all copies with the "tom-boy" princess ya'll loved so much. That supposed role model would still be there.
The princesses have been getting updated through out the ages to make them modern. If you are not a fan of this you have only the world to blame, where makeup coats toddlers and bikinis are made in newborn size. If you do not like this you have a lot of work to get things changed. To complain about something so small is beyond ridiculous, fix the bigger picture first.
Really, I don't care about this new change. I've got bigger things to kvetch about (closing of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad for a long while, what??). I really wish they'd do the same for all of the princesses; the new looks are just not right. They don't feel like Disney any more. If I wanted my kids to play with Bratz dolls I would buy them.
