my DW has had an operation on her foot , 3 weeks ago ,they said before it that she would be fine for her holiday, but said they had a bit more to do than they first thought.3 weeks on she is still on crutches and a lot of pain , still 4 weeks till we go so hopefully will be back to normal , if not and we wanted bulk head seats when is the latest we should contact Virgin, or should i contact them now and if we do not need them, call them when my wife is walking normally.
i recieved a form about 2 months ago from Virgin asking if my wife needed any assistance as she is disabled, but i talked to someone and said no as with there being no steps she would be fine , and we did not need any seats kept, i would prefer to wait to nearer the time of our holiday.
Any suggestions

I would contact them now, the number for travelling with disabilities is this I believe : 0870 990 8350

They may at least be able to guide you, good luck. ;)

What rotten luck :(

Hopefully she will be better by the time you travel, but to be on the safe side I would follow Johnny's excellent suggestion :thumbsup2

I say arrange for the bulkhead seats and, also, consider the long walk through the airport to customs...... :sunny:

We arranged a wheelchair for DH this year but, to be honest, waiting around for it after we'd landed and, consequently, being at the end of every queue there seemed to be, ended up being more tiring than if he'd walked!

I'd suggest thinking about one though if your wife is still in a lot of pain by the time you travel.
As long as you ask the cabin crew before you land they can radio ahead for one on the day :thumbsup2

If you do need a wheelchair around the Airport most of the queue's can be shortened as for instance the Customs pass through at MCO has a special aisle for disabled.
In addition, Virgin and I am sure many airlines are pretty quick at arranging a w/chair once you leave the plane, with luck you shouldn't really be impacted by any delays.

We had to wait until everyone had left the Virgin flight before we were allowed off for the wheelchair.
The guy they got to push Phil was supposed to be pushing 2 chairs so I pushed in order for anyone to get anywhere and the disabled queue ended up being the slowest with the most miserable customs lady............

We were still out, and on our way, in less than an hour but DH got quite agitated and felt ill hanging around :sad2:

Virgin were great at providing the chair, I guess it was actually the airport staff on duty that let the side down ;)

Have a great holiday whatever you decide :thumbsup2

thanks for the replies , talked to our local pharmacist about this today when i was in and he said basically the same as you , to contact them now and let them know, he says that she would need a front row seat because of the chances of getting hit on it would be much greater in ordinary, and he doesnt think it would be worth the risk, as he says she will she will still be sore, and reckons that i will have to get a wheelchair for the parks as well as he does`nt think she will be able to manage them, maybe for a bit but not for the amount of walking that needs to be done, to say that DW is not happy when i told her what he said and what you have said is an understatement.
she was looking forward to the backseat tvs [DW is easy pleased]and she would like to know if you sit in a front row seat do you not have a tv.
thanks for the replies

I would also suggest getting written confirmation from GP/surgeon. Anybody with a recent surgical operation is at greater risk of DVT, so I would ask the professionals if she is fit to go long-haul by air.

If you have a bulkhead seat then you still get a personal TV yes, it just comes up from beneath the seat rather than be fixed to a seat in front of you.

thanks for that johnny,
the surgeon new she was going to florida before the op so he said it would not be a problem, its just that they had more work to do with her than they thought, so recovery will be a bit longer, but will get a letter from them

Yep, as Johnny says, you just pull up the tvs and, in the bulkhead seats, you also get the added advantage of the big baby table which people put the 'Skycots' on :thumbsup2

You are welcome - happy planning ;)

Hi,

I know this is a bit of a downer but any chance you can postpone for a few weeks? The DVT issue is a serious one and you may need to check your travel insurance. I am not sure of your travel dates or what accomm you have booked or even the size of your group. You may not be able to re-schedule but it might be worth considering if you can?

unfortunatley unable to reschedule, but we are staying at RPR the 1st week so will have the FOTL which will help and 2 weeks at POFQ, there are 2 adults and 1 child.
phoned Virgin and explained the situation , and said he would put all the details on the booking [or whatever they do] although there was no guarantee of the seats , he said they would also contact Flybe in Belfast for help when we are going although "George Best Belfast City airport" is quite small,so hopefully not many problems there, and help will be available when in London.
thanks again
