Operation Military Pride- Adopt a Soldier

:Pinkbounc

I told some of my students about adopting several soldiers, and they thought that I had "literally" adopted them. :teeth:

Thanks for posting this! I just got a name of a Marine from Pembo and now I have an idea of what to put in the care package. Lots of great information!!

Just as an FYI --
A great person started this on another (pin) board. Several of us have been sending items to our assignated soldiers.
I sent off one package after work Friday and have more to send next week.
At work I mentioned this. And they in turn wanted to do this as a corporate wide support.
They were instructed to contact the National Guard and are hitting a brick wall. The National Guard is meeting over this, as they stated they are being bombarded by other companies wanting to do the same.
So far this committee is being told by the N.G. that food is not a good idea to send. Packages will be searched and most likely the food will not be sent onto it's destination. The individual from the N.G. suggested they sponsor a U.S.O. in Asia.

I asked on the other board how we (our pin group) are able to send food and supplies. It is because the person who started this has special authorization from the officer in charge of the unit that we have been assigned names from.
To identify our boxes, we are to write on the return address exactly what she told us. Evidently this will be enough for them to allow them to be delivered intact.

I just wanted to mention my experiences so far.

The box I sent was a stuffed pretty good with food, AA batteries, razers, etc. Even with mailing parcel post the cost was just under $20.

Any questions? Feel free to ask.

After looking at this link, I am going to pass it on to the committee at work. They were wanting to send care packages specifically to soldiers from IA and NE. Maybe this site can help. :)

Thanks for the info regarding the food. I am glad you posted that.

I was wondering why other places are saying not to send it.

I keep seeing on CNN today, they are saying not to send mail or care packages to troops unless you are a direct friend or relative. Not sure what to do now, I've already sent a couple, I wonder if they will get them now.

I am going to keep sending packages and letters. I think it is still OK to send things through Operation Military Pride. Just make sure you follow their guidelines and write Operation Military Pride above your return address.

Unless I misunderstood Ari Fleisher today, he was encouraging us to send packages.

Just wanted to bump this back to the top of the list.

I gave a donation at the site mentioned here to send a package. Do you know if they tell you who they sent it too? I was thinking now I should have gotten a name and sent something myself. The K9 unit is a great idea because I'm a big animal lover. Are the names people that don't have a lot of family to send things? It's so difficult to watch the news and see the lack of support for our troops from so many people. I'd like to feel I could contribute some small support to someone. Thanks for the great suggestion. My prayers are with all the military and their families. Beth

Beth, there may be some that don't have a lot of family.

I imagine there may also be some that don't want to put too much of a strain on their families, especially the lower rank NCOs.

We've received three names, one of them is an AM3 in the Navy (an E-4) and two are sergeants (at least an E-5), all of them sharing with others. Maybe these are men who signed up to help out the men in their unit.

I just signed up at OMP for two adoptees for us here at work. People here are very generous, so it will be exciting to see what kinds of items are donated and sent. I asked to adopt if possible one male and one female from New York State. This is a good way to create positive feelings and help out someone who might need a boost occasionally. Thanks for the link!

Anyone heard from their soldier yet?

I did! I received a short letter last week. I thought it was nice considering the war started a day or two after it was sent. He said the cards and letters the soldiers get from OMP really help the moral.

Congrats, bobcat! :Pinkbounc

Anyone else?

I waited almost a week after signing up to adopt a soldier at OMP, and still hadn;t heard back from them. I had to email Amy directly, and she responded within the hour with our assigned soldiers. If anyone else is having difficulties getting their adoptees, you may want to try emailing her directly at MilitaryPrideHQ@aol.com.

We did get one male and one female per my request. I have written a letter to each of them and will send those out today. I enclosed a self-addressed stamped envelope in the letters to make it easier for our adoptees to write back. I hope to follow the letters with our first care packages on Friday.
