Operation Big Thunder: the Dole Whip Conspiracy COMPLETE

Top Gun is the movie reference....let's face it...who hasn't seen that one at least 100 times? :rotfl2: The carrier looked awesome. We're thinking about a trip to Myrtle in the next 2 years (have to start saving points for Aulani) and DH would love that!

Last year, she started running and training for a 5K. She met her goal, dropped a few pounds, finished 2 5K races, and made me very proud of her. She's kept going because it's helped her feel healthier.

I only mention this because her run on Tuesday morning led her to the Pawleys Island Bakery, and she jogged all the way back holding a bag of donuts and cinnamon buns dripping with icing. In my mind, this is the greatest justification for a run ever.

It was only a mile.....but it was worth it! That place made some delicious pastries!!!:worship:

If you've never driven Hwy. 17 between Pawleys Island and Charleston, you have missed out on...well, nothing. Once you hit the town of Georgetown, you pass into the Francis Marion National Forest, and it's a good 40 miles or so of nothing. Make sure you gas up before you leave.

NOT a lie....there was NOTHING.

And I thought the couch was uncomfortable. If, of course, Julie ever made me sleep there.

I was going to say LIE!! but someone beat me to it.

Back in the hangar, they had a special Medal of Honor museum. Inside, it told the poignant stories of many of the recipients, most of whom sacrificed their lives and were given the award posthumously. It was moving and uplifting at the same time, and well worth the time spent. There are a lot of people parading themselves around the country trying to pass themselves off as leaders and role models. They can't hold a candle to the people enshrined here.

This tribute was so tastefully done. These are the true heros.

(Plus this was the only exhibit that was air-conditioned.)

:cheer2::cheer2: Good work, Julie!

I know the military does it differently, and this is an honor, but would you get on a cruise ship named the Titanic?

Good point.

And she hasn't convinced you to join her yet? :confused3

He's actually out running right now! (And because life's unfair, he can run faster than me, even though I've been doing it longer.)

I still say being chased by a bear is the greatest justification, but this is a close second. :thumbsup2

That used to be my motto!

With a security system like that, you'll never lose another catalytic converter.:lmao::rotfl2:

:rotfl2::rotfl::lmao::lmao::rotfl::rotfl2:

Is Scotty in an ejector seat??? :confused3 :rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

Nope, just being Scotty.:rolleyes2

I hadn’t heard about that. Fantastic! It’s like the other folks around here that actually got up and started running.
I glad for them, but it hasn’t gotten me up off my rump to join ‘em yet.

Ok… now I feel bad…

But I happy for Julie!

Thanks! And really.....if I can do it, ANYONE can do it!

Congrats to Julie for doing the 5ks and keeping it up. I keep trying to run but just can't keep it up.

How cool is touring a carrier! I would love to do this someday. We usually stop at the USS Alabama on our way to the beach but a carrier would really be a treat. Was the Yorktown built by women? We have a small ship here the USS Kidd and it was built after the war started and it was built all by women.

The kids look like they're have a great time especially Scotty. Looks like he makes life very interesting.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the lie is that you didn't bring the gps.

Julie wanted to try and shut this hatch after the kids went through, but the stairs made it a little difficult.

And I thought the couch was uncomfortable. If, of course, Julie ever made me sleep there.

OK… I’m officially done over-thinking the location of this update’s lie. It’s between these two. Julie actually confirmed that the second one is misleading, but I think we all knew that. As such, I’m saying that the first one there is the lie.

Locking up the kids below decks… that had to be your idea.

Is there something wrong with me that I don't remember crossing that bridge into Charleston? :rotfl: Is there another way in? :confused3 It really is a cool bridge and I'm not exactly sure where you were to take that picture.

As Mark’s unofficial and unpaid research assistant for that particular part of the trip I can answer a couple of the inquiries

(Mark… feel free to cuss me for this later on if I'm stepping out of bounds here)

You only cross the bridge coming into Charleston if you are traveling south along US-17 along the coast. Pretty much every other road enters the city by traveling straight down the peninsula (especially I-26). Patriot’s Point (where the picture was taken) is actually just north of Charleston proper in the suburb of Mt Pleasant. If you follow the signs over to the Point from downtown (and stay off of I-526), it will take you right over the bridge.

Man that place looks cool! I would love to spend some time there.

Is the Yorktown the only ship you can tour Maverick?

Maverick is currently engaged, but Goose can answer that one…

You can currently board The Yorktown and the WW-II veteran Destroyer USS Laffy (DD-724). There is a submarine on site as well (USS Clamagore SS-343) but unfortunately this vessel cannot be boarded at this time. There is also a section of the park set up as a typical Vietnam era “Navel Support Base” which is also an excellent learning exhibit.

How cool is touring a carrier! I would love to do this someday. We usually stop at the USS Alabama on our way to the beach but a carrier would really be a treat. Was the Yorktown built by women? We have a small ship here the USS Kidd and it was built after the war started and it was built all by women.

The USS Lexington (a sister to the Yorktown) is also open as a museum in Corpus Christi TX. That might be easier for you to get to

http://usslexington.com/

Now about the folks that built that one…
Construction began just a few days before the Pearl Harbor Raid (and therefore before the massive build up got underway), but there were almost certainly a mix of men and women on the build team before completion in 1943.

I know the military does it differently, and this is an honor, but would you get on a cruise ship named the Titanic?

:lmao:

that’s an interesting observation but the difference (to me) is that Titanic was lost due to misfortune. Yorktown (CV-5) was taken out while putting up a fight, and replacing her with another ship of the same name was a way to allow the USN and survivors from the original ship (many of whom served on the CV-10) to carry that fight back to their advisories. It was both an honor and a bit of psychological tactic.

Actually, this particular ship was to originally laid down as the USS Bon Homme Richard in honor of John Paul Jones’ Revolutionary War ship. That name is still welded into the Yorktown’s keel. After the Yorktown (CV-5) was lost at the Battle of Midway in June of 1942, this hull was renamed.

Uncalled for and pointless history lesson completed…
I’ll go back to my dungeon now.

Which quote? There's more than one. Still, it was so obvious that I'll give you a +1:thumbsup2

Great update, though I think you missed a golden opportunity to quote "Shag" while passing Fort Sumpter. I'll forgive you though since you're a man.

I cannot quote that which I have not seen. Or heard of. :confused3

Looks like an area that my husband would love! If we're ever down that way I'll make a note to check it out!

Does he like aircraft carriers? Or submarines? Or destroyers? If so, then yes!

And, good for your DW-that's awesome that she's completed the 5K and kept at it. Bonus points should be awarded for running with pastries. You're a lucky man.

::yes::

She's done much better at sticking with it than I do. Every time I try to take up running again, I'll start off ok for the first quarter mile or so, and then suddenly remember: Oh, yeah. This sucks. :rotfl2:

I've had to use a sheet for a window covering, when a cabin we rented had no curtains in the master bedroom. That is the window the sun rise hit first, lol.

You do what you gotta do! :thumbsup2

Caddyshack

And an update that showed up after bed time…

Cool! Time to go read.
Fun, fun, fun…

+1:thumbsup2

Hunt for Red October

+1:thumbsup2

Top Gun

Did someone already get this one?

+1:thumbsup2

Sort of, but it wasn't called out explicitly.

Hunt for Red October

(and probably a number of other films, but certainly in RedOct)

+1:thumbsup2

and a bit more: Top Gun

+1:thumbsup2

Hunt for Red October

+1:thumbsup2

Final Countdown

That's a more obscure film
(which I must sadly confess that i actually saw in the theaters)
If there are more quotes from that one I may miss them

+1:thumbsup2

Ok, now you're getting scary. I wasn't sure anyone else had actually seen that movie, let alone could quote from it. It is a good (if obscure) one, though.

First and foremost, WAY TO GO JULIE...you rock girl! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Mark, shame on you eating those pastries in front of Julie who is doing such a great job with her runs. You really should be ashamed of yourself.

Great update. I love how your kids get into all these excursions you take...it's awesome.

And "There are a lot of people parading themselves around the country trying to pass themselves off as leaders and role models. They can't hold a candle to the people enshrined here" -- all I can say is AMEN!

Good work, Julie!

:thumbsup2 She's done a lot of hard work to get to this point.

You choose...poorly.

That's the cup of a carpenter.

:darth: [heavy breathing] "Bull S***." [heavy breathing] "You can be mine."

The Force is strong in this one.

:I know the military does it differently, and this is an honor, but would you get on a cruise ship named the Titanic?

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

I'm holding out for the photon torpedoes.

I thought they were only available on the late-model vans.

Julie did, huh? BS.

The kids do annoy Julie sometimes, too.

She will, if you keep dragging her name through the mud like you just did.

Moi?

Excellent tour and pictures, Mark. :thumbsup2

Thanks!

Is there something wrong with me that I don't remember crossing that bridge into Charleston? :rotfl: Is there another way in? :confused3 It really is a cool bridge and I'm not exactly sure where you were to take that picture.

Looks like Rob already explained it. You have to be on US 17.

I toured Charleston with girls, so we obviously did not visit the Yorktown. However, it looks really cool and Denny and I are definitely planning on stopping in Charleston on our way home from HHI. I will put that on the list. thanks for the great pics.

:thumbsup2 I don't think you'll be disappointed! You can also catch a boat to tour Ft. Sumter from there, as you'll see (spoiler alert) later on in this TR.

And she hasn't convinced you to join her yet? :confused3

My philosophy on running is: why?

I still say being chased by a bear is the greatest justification, but this is a close second. :thumbsup2

Ok, that's a good reason. The biggest problem with running is that you have to do it for 30 days to drop 5 lbs. and then it takes 1 day to gain it all back.

With a security system like that, you'll never lose another catalytic converter.:lmao::rotfl2:

:lmao::rotfl2::rotfl:

I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five?" Well, to tell you the truth, in all this excitement I kind of lost track myself. But being as this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?

Ok, I'll call that a lie. I'm sure she's made you sleep there. :rotfl:

Seems to be a popular guess. So let's recap: you all think I'm a lazy slob, I suck at golf, and there's no way I could be a model husband. Did I catch everything?

Is Scotty in an ejector seat??? :confused3 :rotfl2::lmao::rotfl:

I....I don't know. :confused3

::yes:: It really is amazing. I got to go there once a long, long time ago. I'd love to go back sometime too.:thumbsup2

Aircraft carriers rock.

Um... I thought that's what we were just talking about. :confused3

Well then, we're on (another) boat!

Tower, this is Ghostrider requesting a flyby.

Negative, Ghostrider, the pattern is full.

Sorry Goose, it's time to buzz a tower.

Are you guys enjoying yourselves?

Work was interfering with my Dis time (imagine that), so I’m only now getting around to commenting.

And away we go…

Couldn't have been too bad...you got all the movie quotes! :rotfl2:

I hadn’t heard about that. Fantastic! It’s like the other folks around here that actually got up and started running.
I glad for them, but it hasn’t gotten me up off my rump to join ‘em yet.

Ok… now I feel bad…

But I happy for Julie!

Don't feel bad--it's a struggle for me, too. I know I need to do a better job of staying in shape, but I actively hate running.

We had a a bunch of friends who decided to train for a marathon last year. For a while, I felt like I couldn't have any conversations with them. Every talk usually consisted of what that day's run would be, what kind of intervals they're doing, etc. And the only runs I could talk about were after my visits to McDonald's. :confused3

Dude… you’d be proud of her no matter what and you know it.

::yes:::love:

Must agree…
Donut Justification!

Annnnnnnnd…
Sloth Justification!

:woohoo:

Ya’ did good to even make the turn.
Missing it would have been baaaad…

Seriously. We definitely didn't want to head into the city at that point.

Ummmm…
You went straight here… didn’t you?

:headache:

Yah… that’s a problem.

If it makes you feel any better, that’s a mistake that many, many folks make.

The signing there did leave much to be desired.

Actually I’ve made the same mistake, but when last I did so I was directed over the Old Cooper River Bridges…

Bridge2.jpg

If you happened to headed south you were tossed onto the older 1929 span.

Bridge3.jpg

It had two very narrow Lanes and every simi-truck in the county seemed to be on it at the same time I was.
It was just a might unnerving the first time I crossed the thing…

Unintentionally…

Just for perspective, here’s how they compared right after the new one was finished.

Bridge1.jpg

1929? Sounds like it was definitely time for a replacement. Still, for a bridge to last that long, the engineers obviously did stellar work. I'm sure they received many kudos. :rolleyes1

Nice! With that in place…
Barry would have the Mini-Van of Doom and…
you’d have the Mini-Van of Destruction.

Just imagine the potential mayhem.

:woohoo:

Mom wanted to shut the hatch?
Sure it wasn’t you? Sounds more like a dad kind’a notion.

From the impression you guys have of her, it seems someone has been portraying Julie as basically a saint.

Oh, right.

If?
Are you telling me you’ve never been banished?

:rolleyes1

Grousing about Engineers is a time honored tradition.
There is graffiti on the Pyramids making the same complaints.

I thought it was the engineers doing the grousing.

Nope… just unfortunate that you didn’t find one.

Maybe next time.

Great shot. I love the expression. :lmao:

Scotty is unique. Let's put it that way.

It’s probably due to the poor resolution of my work computer (all pictures are dark and a bit fuzzy),
but I don’t see a cable in that image.
There certainly are such on the ship though, so I may need to check this out more closely when I get home.

Nope, my bad. It's fixed now.

Being an athletic failure, I’m pretty sure they’d have washed me out of the program.
But I actually do regret not having been part of the team.

It definitely has appeal.

And you were worried that I’d be trashing this section. I think ya’ done good.
Certainly makes me want to go back (but I am not normal as we’ve already established).

Whew. That's a relief!

Did y’all have time to try one of the scavenger hunts?
Given that you had other fish to fry that day, I wouldn’t have expected you to take near as much time
as that, but I was just curious.

Unfortunately, no. As you said, we had a few other things we wanted to see, so we contented ourselves with doing the walking tours.

Cool! “Check Point Sumter” perhaps?

::yes::

Dirty Harry.

I think I did the same ride over the old bridge when we were there. Scary old bridge but have not been back down that way to try our the new one.

Congrats to Julie for running. I am struggling right now to get out there and keep it up.

Touring the ship is great and claustophobic all at once. :rotfl:

Wow, I feel like I just watched the movie, between the actual chapter update and all the quotes that followed. Jonesing for some Top Gun now. Jeff really needs to read this TR, he'd be quoting for days!

Jeff sounds like a cool guy!

Of course if we watch the movie I might have to use Meg Ryan's line which seems a bit out of place to quote here.

:rotfl2::rotfl2:

YAY I'm on the board. Being on west cost time well, I miss early spotting. Yes and no to my question. I wondered if air speed velocity, as stated, implied that it was asking for an average. Since he didn't use the word average.

In that case, no, the average wouldn't apply.

I work for a forensic engineering firm and have an unfortunate tendency to get hung up on minutia like that...well cuz it's not minute when we are asked to be an expert witness I guess LOL!

Lawyers. :sad2:

Not that I am mind you, I'm the dork who translates stuff into layman's terms for clients. Or tries. We use velocity quite a bit in reconstructing wind events (roofs) or motor vehicle accidents though in that case it's really delta force.

Nothing wrong with being an engineering nerd. :thumbsup2

Poor little unladen swallow!

Do you mean an African or a European swallow?

Great update and most unfortunate that you left Darth at home. Silly question. No smartphones with GPS? Killer on the phone battery but it can get the job done.

No, we are too cheap, so we only have a pay-as-you-go dumbphone. We don't even text on it because it uses twice as many minutes as calling.

I love that she ran to the bakery and back. I so need to convince Jeff to do that for us!

If there's a downside to this, I haven't found it yet.

Now you're just being mean -- posting a chapter at nearly midnight on a day when you've already posted a chapter. :sad2:

It wasn't the same day as the previous chapter. Remember, just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

Great chapter though! Aircraft carriers are awesomely cool!!

That's got to be a Man Law, I would think.

Scotty, don't move. Your body weight is the only thing keeping that jet from falling into the water.

 If you told him that, he'd probably lift his foot, just to see what would happen.

Man that place looks cool! I would love to spend some time there.

Is the Yorktown the only ship you can tour Maverick?

It was very cool, Goose! Looks like Rob already answered this question for you.

Top Gun is the movie reference....let's face it...who hasn't seen that one at least 100 times? :rotfl2: The carrier looked awesome. We're thinking about a trip to Myrtle in the next 2 years (have to start saving points for Aulani) and DH would love that!

It's perfect for a day trip from Myrtle--great to break up the week if you get bored at the beach after a while. Lots more to see and do in Charleston, too, which is a beautiful city.

In fact, why don't you guys head there and rent us your points for Aulani? :rolleyes1 :rotfl:

Hi Captain, I'm a little late, but I have good excuse: three week vacation in the U.S. (without Disney). And thanks to your very good trip reporting skills we even went to the Slugger factory in Louisville!
I already made a mentally note of Pawley's island and Charleston, in case we ever get close to that area. But don't feel stalked, it might take more than a decade for us to get there...

It was only a mile.....but it was worth it! That place made some delicious pastries!!!:worship:

::yes::

NOT a lie....there was NOTHING.

I think we did see a couple of double-wides.

I was going to say LIE!! but someone beat me to it.

:sad2:

This tribute was so tastefully done. These are the true heros.

Some of the stories of their bravery were mind-boggling.

This just in: running still sucks.

Thanks! And really.....if I can do it, ANYONE can do it!

And Anyone Can Cook!

Congrats to Julie for doing the 5ks and keeping it up. I keep trying to run but just can't keep it up.

If it was easy, everybody would do it. I usually fall off the wagon myself.

That's a great question. Looks like Rob piped in on that one, and he's definitely an authority on these matters. I would imagine a few Rosie the Riveters had a hand in it.

The kids look like they're have a great time especially Scotty. Looks like he makes life very interesting.

Scotty's fun. He even comes with his own sountrack.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the lie is that you didn't bring the gps.

:darth:

I'll record your guess, but keep in mind: I'm a guy. I have trouble taking orders for directions anyway. :rotfl:

OK… I’m officially done over-thinking the location of this update’s lie. It’s between these two. Julie actually confirmed that the second one is misleading, but I think we all knew that. As such, I’m saying that the first one there is the lie.

They really travel well. I'm dreading the day when they turn into bored teenagers.

Me too, Pat. Me too.

Wait till you see the submarine, then. :scared:

Hi Captain, I'm a little late, but I have good excuse: three week vacation in the U.S. (without Disney). And thanks to your very good trip reporting skills we even went to the Slugger factory in Louisville!
I already made a mentally note of Pawley's island and Charleston, in case we ever get close to that area. But don't feel stalked, it might take more than a decade for us to get there...

:welcome: Katharina! I'm glad you're here!

How was your vacation? Without Disney, I'm sure it wasn't ideal. :rotfl2:

Did you enjoy the Louisville Slugger factory? Louisville is such a neat city.

Jeff sounds like a cool guy!

He thinks so. :lmao: The challenge with watching TG again, which of course we own, is Jeff puts it on surround sound and BLASTS the entire house.

Do you mean an African or a European swallow?

I'll go with European. It gives me a 50/50 shot of not being thrown over.

Though for some reason I swear it's actually East African.

No, we are too cheap, so we only have a pay-as-you-go dumbphone. We don't even text on it because it uses twice as many minutes as calling.

I give you 3 years tops before you have to change that to unlimited calls and texts...teens text.

A LOT.

They don't however, actually answer their phone.

Thanks Rob, I hope to get by there sometime.

Your welcome sir and I’d love to hear that you were headed down this way.
However… being as you’d be traveling from New Brunswick, there’s also a carrier that is a whole lot closer to y’all

USS Intrepid (another sister to the Yorktown) is open to the public in NYC.

And… an even bigger treasure trove of historic naval ships is up that way as well in Fall River, Massachusetts, including a battleship, a destroyer, a sub, a Soviet built corvette and 2 PT boats. Plus everything else stored in the extensive museum collection at “Battleship Cove”.

Ok, that's a good reason. The biggest problem with running is that you have to do it for 30 days to drop 5 lbs. and then it takes 1 day to gain it all back.

Not a lie! :lmao:
Seems to be a popular guess. So let's recap: you all think I'm a lazy slob, I suck at golf, and there's no way I could be a model husband. Did I catch everything?

It’s not that we think these things…
It’s that you continue confirming them.

Couldn't have been too bad...you got all the movie quotes!

And I took my time reading through to find them…
It got messy in between the search for quotes and the writing of the responses.

Actually Im being very good right now. I’ll make all my comments first and only then am I going to go back and get the quotes.
Y’all have been warned.

1929? Sounds like it was definitely time for a replacement. Still, for a bridge to last that long, the engineers obviously did stellar work. I'm sure they received many kudos.

You’d think so now wouldn’t ya’.

From the impression you guys have of her, it seems someone has been portraying Julie as basically a saint.

Ahhemmm…
Someone?

Oh, right.

That’s better.

Maybe next time.

Shhhhhh… I’ve got a plan for that which involves a couple of the magnets that I use when we cruise DCL.
I’ll post the pic if I get to pull it off.

Don’t tell anyone though.

Scotty is unique. Let's put it that way.

Uniquely put :thumbsup2

Whew. That's a relief!

Does this mean that my Dope-Slap-Deficit is now up to four?

Scotty's fun. He even comes with his own sountrack.

:lmao: :lmao: :rotfl2:
Care to play us a few sound bites?

Duly noted, and Julie's reputation as a saint with nary an evil thought in her head is still intact.

As it should be

Not at all! You are indeed earning your salary! In fact, I'm giving you a 5% raise on the spot.

That’s nearly as good as the various raises I’ve earned working in church bands.
And just as appreciated.

...the USS Clamagore was open when we visited. I'm not sure if they're limiting hours or not, but we were able to tour it.

WooHoo! I missed that announcement.

And this one too…

Ptriots Point selected as site of National Medal of Honor museum

Sounds like that would be cool to see as well.

There are quite a lot of retired UNS vessels in wide ranging conditions that are open to the public (including 8 battleships and 5 carriers). My mission is to see as many of them as I can and to write about the journeys as well as the ships. No one would dream of publishing such, and even fewer folks would read it, but I intend to do it none the less (just cause I’ve nothing better to do with myself).

They really travel well. I'm dreading the day when they turn into bored teenagers.

I think you’ve already filled them with a love for travel and discovery.
They’ll still be bored teenagers, but they’ll do it around the house on a daily bases. Which mean that the more you travel the better.
