Operation Big Thunder: the Dole Whip Conspiracy COMPLETE

Hi. :wave2:

I'm late to the party, can I still join in?

Only if you brought donuts. Or bacon.

Just kidding. :welcome:

I just have to say that some of these posts should come with a disclaimer. "Those attempting healthful eating may want to be warned about the frequency of photographic evidence of the most delectable burgers in the world," or something along those lines. ;)

I think I scared off any healthy eaters a long time ago. They know they won't find a single vegetable featured in these TR's.

Seriously, I'm really enjoying your trip report.

Why, thank you!

On the note so serious side, I love obscure movie quotes. Right up my alley, as it were.

Why so serious? Oh wait, you said not-so-serious. Nevermind.

I'm going to say this one was not an exact quote but more a reference to Pirates of the Caribbean. Instead of that's got to be the best pirate I've ever seen, you called your kids the worst.

Well, they don't look very threatening in that picture, do they? No swords, no eye patches or scars....they don't even have a ship. I mean, I've never heard of a cute pirate.

If I'm wrong, ah well. Judging by my avatar, you should be able to tell how pirate obsessed I am anyway. ;)

I thought it was Shakespeare in the Park. Dost mother know thou wearest her drapes?

Just having fun with you. Savvy?

Looking forward to more, and love the family photo on the beach, and the one of you and your lovely wife. Awesome. :thumbsup2:

:thanks:

LIE!!! I'm a nerd too!

::yes::

Pawleys was gorgeous and I loved being there with our friends. I was also looking forward to the next day! Would we be able to keep the surprise for another few hours?!

I don't know. Are any of the adults in your household terrible at keeping secrets? :confused3

those last few hours are the hardest!!!!

::yes::

I am just getting caught up and I have just two little tidbits to add about your Charleston photos.

One - the houses were built with narrow fronts and long sides, because you used to be taxed on the linear footage of the front of your house. So the crafty southerners, just made their houses longer and not wider to avoid additional taxation. I am sure the City of Charleston has rectified that by now and tax on square footage. I would say acreage, but nobody has anything close to an acre of land in the heart of Charleston.

Two - Charleston had a very serious earthquake in 1886. I imagine the house with the crooked door settled during that disaster and they just made a new door to fit the now crooked frame.

I just love Charleston. Such a beautiful and interesting city!!

Thanks for sharing !!

Very cool! Rob brought up the earthquake as well. I would never have guessed about the property taxes, though. Very clever. Thanks for the mini-history lesson! It certainly is a beautiful city.

Late on any chance of movie quotes. :sad2:

Love the possible Christmas card photos. I like the second one too. I absolutely love the picture of you and Julie. You both look adorable.

:thanks: You're too kind.

Can't wait for the reveal as you make your way to Disney.

So nice that your beach time was great. :beach: :goodvibes

So what's your guess? When do you think the kids figured it out?

I cannot believe I did not know about this report. I'm in now.

Fasten your seatbelts, its going to be a bumpy ride.

Jill in CO

:welcome: Jill!

Why, did you take the Knight Bus over here?

Only if you brought donuts. Or bacon.

Just kidding. :welcome:

How about both?

I think I scared off any healthy eaters a long time ago. They know they won't find a single vegetable featured in these TR's.

On the bright side, if I'm not eating it, at least I can drool over pictures of it. :thumbsup2

Why, thank you!

:goodvibes

Why so serious? Oh wait, you said not-so-serious. Nevermind.

If you're channeling the Joker in the second (most current) Batman series, I'm going to have to :faint:

Because my husband is a die hard (not with a vengeance) Batman fan.

And if you weren't intending to, then you can always pretend anyway. :rotfl2:

Serious?

Me?

Never! ;)

Well, they don't look very threatening in that picture, do they? No swords, no eye patches or scars....they don't even have a ship. I mean, I've never heard of a cute pirate.

Well, the monkey is pretty cute in those films. Technically, he's a pirate.

Your kids are adorable. :goodvibes

I thought it was Shakespeare in the Park. Dost mother know thou wearest her drapes?

Just having fun with you. Savvy?

:rotfl2:

Savvy. :thumbsup2

Thanks for saving your updates for days that I'm swamped. Are you trying to be my second nemesis now or something? You and Rob seem to be conspiring on something here. :rotfl2::lmao:

I'm going to have to get you and Glenn to e-mail me your work schedules so I can plan these updates for more convenient times.

Um... burger snob? :confused3

Could be. I don't touch the veggie burgers. :crazy2:

Don't worry, the voice mails and e-mails will still be there when you get back home. :thumbsup2

That's the part we try not to think about on vacation.

Once or twice.

Ever get that feeling of deja vu?

Where do your kids get that kind of behavior? :confused3 :rotfl:

Probably Julie. Seems like I always have to set her straight.

Yah… that does tend to make a bit of a difference.

My family has a little place in Garden City.
Ain’t anywhere near as exclusive as Pawleys (nor as big as that house), but as long as Poppa is willing to share it with his sons, we won’t be complaining.

If you have family that is willing to share, you're blessed.

Just to clarify, the house we stayed in did not belong to my friend's family. His uncle owns one down the way that was already rented for the week.

Counting the debts… I have even farther to go. :lmao:

And the college bills haven't even started yet! :woohoo:

I don’t know.
Avoiding fast food in favor of dives seem like a higher purpose to me.

Agreed.

Oh, they were still quite angry and unreasonable…
You just didn’t know about it until you got back to reality.

Don’t go back too soon.

They took my stapler.

Sarcasm… just another service we offer
(and therefore… not the lie)

:teeth:

Crappy grainy > nonexistent :thumbsup2

As always, you have the right perspective.

I’d rather encounter this particular cephalopod as opposed to that Ursula chick.
I hear that one’s bad news.

What if you can't sing?

Hummm…
It looks more like the headwaters of the Murderkill River to me.
You ought to have recognized that one right off.

No, that flows from the Pit of Despair.

Nice!
How sad for those folks that aren’t nerds.
What ever do they do with themselves for entertainment?

Well never know…
because those folks won’t be posting on the Dis, that’s for certain.

Exactly. I was quite stunned he remembered that much from the battlefield, actually. Stunned and proud.

And if I could have gotten away from home
(and didn’t have to drop a pile of Benjamins on a car repair that same week :headache:

I’d have meet you there.
 drat!

Now that would have been a great spot to hang out. Next time.

Looks a lot like the DisDad’s Club House.
(albeit with fewer Philadelphia sports posters in that instance as well)

Not if I have anything to say about it!

You “did” find one and yet did “not” snap a picture of it?
Or… you did snap a picture and left it out of the TR as a red herring.

Sneaky…

That is a pickle, isn't it? I explained the possibilities here in response to Glenn above.

pirate: time!!!

You mean something like this…

RT001.jpg

And yes that is a derelict school buss being used as a dinning room. You’ll find it (and two more like it) here…

RT000.jpg

in LeSage WV.
Something we encountered on a Band Trip to Dayton OH (quite the adventure that was).

Another thing you’ll find there is grub like this…

RT002.jpg

and my favotite new discovery at that dive: mettwurst…

RT003.jpg

Yummm….

Sorry, couldn’t resist…
no one would read a TR based that trip if my current one is any guideline)

I remember Steve (goherd1028) telling us about this place when we met up with him in Huntington last summer. We've GOT to try it someday. It looks awesome. What is mettwurst, anyway? :confused3

Wouldn’t have it ehhh?
Hummmm….

You'd think he would just sit there and take it.

We have one of those?

Who’d a thunk?

I dunno. I just assumed it was there. But you know what happens when you assume.

It would only have been two bucks more to make it a double ya’ know…

Couldn't risk it. That might have made it unhealthy.

I’ll have to think about that one for a bit.
Let me get back to you.

Ok, maybe I did mention it once or twice.

That's awesome! :thumbsup2

Again, the lie is not particularly obvious.
There are candidates, but nothing that stands out.
Must be time for some over thinking…

This is going to be a tough one, I'll tell you that straight off.

:beach: Well, when you put it like that it seems downright tolerable*.

*if you're using the "super awesome" definition of tolerable.

::yes::

Excellent work, ladies. I'd like to commission your work on one of Racine's beaches. I pay in cheeseburgers.

Julie says she'll do it! But she'd also like a garbage plate. She drives a hard bargain.

Looks more the like Erie Canal. You can tell by that the way that one area bends just a little bit to the right. Or starboard, in nautical terms. That last sentence existed solely for the purpose of me being able to say poop deck, which is another nautical term.

:rotfl2::rotfl: He said poop deck!

Thanks for supplying the "nuances" Rob was talking about earlier. :thumbsup2

:thumbsup2 Would have been cooler, although slightly less historically accurate, if Darth Vader had joined the Confederate Army.

That's probably true. Darth Vader makes everything cooler.

I don't believe this.

Hey, I had photographic proof and everything.

The one on your van doesn't count.

Hmm. There's a 4th possibility.

I like to flick the shells like a paper football. That really doesn't have anything to do with your trip report, I just wanted to put it out there.

Interesting. I've always used the frisbee-style sideways toss, myself.

I can believe this.

Well, you've met my kids.

As for the lie: I think it's the part about running out of pre-prepared meals. Nobody pre-prepares PB&J.

True, but we didn't have PB&J for dinner. Or...did we?

:crazy2: No, we didn't. And keep in mind we had to pay out of pocket for meals at Disney the next week, so saving where we could was paramount.

I'm at home, on my recliner. :teeth:

Well, la-dee-da. When's your next meeting, so I know when to post the next update? :confused3 :rotfl:

Wow, you put a lot of venom in your self-effacing humor!

It's ok. I can be totally honest about my appearance now that Julie is stuck with me forever.

Manical laugh. Maniacal laugh!

Sure, I go to see the second worse team in the Major Leagues play baseball yesterday, and you go and do an update. I would have much preferred staying home and reading your great update than sit in beautiful Wrigley Field and watch the clowns that are supposedly a major league team. :lmao::lmao::lmao:

You made the choice, not me!

At least you had a nice venue. I'm really glad we got to see the stadium last year. I remember we met some nice lady afterwards for lunch, too. :goodvibes

Hey...I'm a fast-food and big-box wholesale snob myself.

No Taco Bell for you!

Love how empty it is.

::yes::

But the cutest pirates you'll ever see.

Also true.

Great job, girls.

I would also have contributed some art, but...well, somebody had to take the pictures. :rolleyes1

He is your son!

What was your first clue?

Drooling now.

drooling_homer-712749_gif.png.jpg

Great photos!

Thanks Kathy!

I pick THIS one for the Christmas card....but only if I'm getting one.

Of course you are. You got one last year, right? Unfortunately, it's still coming with the stupid letter attached.

All I can say is you are a lucky man, Mark.

::yes::

Great update, and I can't wait to hear about the surprise.

Me too! Oh, I guess I have to write it up, huh?

The Avengers

(It's pretty close at least)

+1:thumbsup2

I was going from memory on that one. Trying to include some recent titles.

How about both?

Beautiful! You're welcome in my TR's anytime!

On the bright side, if I'm not eating it, at least I can drool over pictures of it. :thumbsup2

That's certainly much healthier.

If you're channeling the Joker in the second (most current) Batman series, I'm going to have to :faint:

Because my husband is a die hard (not with a vengeance) Batman fan.

And if you weren't intending to, then you can always pretend anyway. :rotfl2:

Good! Shout 'em out when you know the answer.

Well, the monkey is pretty cute in those films. Technically, he's a pirate.

Your kids are adorable. :goodvibes

Yeah, but then he becomes undead, and he's less cute that way.

Thanks! They take after their mother.

POTC…
(but that’s really too easy for points)

Ok, have it your way.

A bit of a Harry Potter Refference.
Third book I do believe

+1:thumbsup2

I was just following up her "fasten your seatbelts" quote.

An “Office Space” reference

+1:thumbsup2

The Princess Bride

If you have family that is willing to share, you're blessed.

That I am.
A fact that does not get forgotten.

And the college bills haven't even started yet! :woohoo:

Soon enough…
Soon enough.
:sad2:

Now that would have been a great spot to hang out. Next time.

I’ll have to make a note in my calendar.
Is tomorrow afternoon good for you?

I remember Steve (goherd1028) telling us about this place when we met up with him in Huntington last summer. We've GOT to try it someday. It looks awesome.

There are two of ‘em that I know of. The original built out of old buses and a more traditional drive-in type operation in Huntington. The dogs were most excellent.

What is mettwurst, anyway? :confused3

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mettwurst

A seriously tasty type of pork sausage (with a little bit of a bite to it)…
That’s the first I’d heard of such either, but it just had to be tried.
And now it has to be retried the next time I travel that’a way.

Couldn't risk it. That might have made it unhealthy.

Riiiiiiight… :rolleyes1

That's awesome! :thumbsup2

It’s an image from a tee-shirt I saw a while back.
Some one did some good work there.

Speaking of tee-shirts…
Tell me what size you wear and I’ll get you one from River City.

This is going to be a tough one, I'll tell you that straight off.

Well then it ain’t the license plate.
We all jumped on that one too quickly.

No Taco Bell for you!

A variation on the “Soup Nazi's” infamous line form Seinfeld
(but if I were on the Rules Committee, I don’t know that I’d be giving points for that one)

That I am.

Soon enough…
Soon enough.
:sad2:

It's a scary thought. My plan was to keep increasing contributions to the college account as my income went up. Turns out the only thing steadily rising is tuition. :headache:

I’ll have to make a note in my calendar.
Is tomorrow afternoon good for you?

Yes!

Um...can you send a jet for me?

There are two of ‘em that I know of. The original built out of old buses and a more traditional drive-in type operation in Huntington. The dogs were most excellent.

Well, we'd have to hit the original, then.

Interesting...I'm sure it's better than scrapple.

This isn't a t-shirt, but it fits with the design you posted.

Speaking of tee-shirts…
Tell me what size you wear and I’ll get you one from River City.

Well, now that's mighty kind of you. If you do get by (and please don't make a special trip just for me) let me know what I owe you. I usually wear a Large. And thanks!

Well then it ain’t the license plate.
We all jumped on that one too quickly.

Maybe, maybe not. You have to decide if the lack of a photo is evidence, or a red herring.

(but if I were on the Rules Committee, I don’t know that I’d be giving points for that one)

I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request.

WOO HOO! I got a point. :goodvibes

It helps to have a Batman obsessed husband. Never mind that for some reason, during the 4am feedings when my littlest guy was a baby, that movie would ALWAYS be on. Usually I'd wake up to the delightfulness of seeing Two Face with his face all exposed. Scared the ever lovin'...well, you know...out of me. Every time.

Sorry, total digression there. :lmao: Back to your regular trip report programming.

:happytv:

Lovely beach photos! I'm voting for the second family shot too. Love the combinations of colors. The picture of you and your lovely wife needs to be framed and put on the mantle at home(I hope you have one).

I'm very impressed with Scotty's battlefield set up. Amazing!

Your burger is very impressive! I like seafood and spicy food. I hope it's ok for me to stick around.

I'm glad you enjoyed your time at the beach. You needed to unwind before hitting the parks.

I going to take another shot in the dark and say the lie was that you didn't stay up until midnight. Hopefully you got some rest before the drive to Disney but I also know how hard it is to sleep the night before you leave.
