I have to chuckle at all the hoopla over this. Early coins never had the "In God We Trust" statement on them, but rather had a simple, but appropriate, "Liberty." In fact, some of those coins were still in circulation when I was young and I don't remember anyone being offended by them.
A related issue has been the pledge of allegiance with the phrase "one nation under God." The pledge began as a childrens poem in the late 1800's and was adopted as the official pledge later on. A great concept, I think. Several changes were made over the years and the words "under God" were added during the 195os when President Eisenhower thought it a good idea. Funny how people like to believe it was there since the begining.
Without a doubt, our nation's founders were religious people, but their focus was more on liberty and freedom. I have to wonder if the pledge will eventually be re-written once again. Perhaps it should not read "with liberty and justice for all." Should it be changed to "with liberty and justice for all who believe in God?" I don't think so.
