1800 degrees

Yes, thats correct, 1800 degrees!

Sean Hannon, a Chicago Fire Department paramedic and a counselor at the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance's Burn Camp for injured children, told the aldermen that a sparkler's temperature can reach 1,800 degrees, exceeding the temperature it takes to warp steel, and produce damage similar to "battlefield injuries."

We don't use sparklers but I'll never forget when I was on a mom's message board someone posted a picture of her 18 month old holding a burning sparkler. I literally about crapped myself. What kind of idiot does something like that?

Yeah, I will be the mean mommy on Monday who will not let my little people do sparklers. The cousins will be bringing them and my children are not going to like me.

Oh well, better crabby than burned. My mom let us do them when we were little and I look at the pictures and think I am such a paranoid mom!

I used to let my kids use sparlers until I met a man who had a sparkler go up in 1800 degree flames inthe palm of his hamd. 3rd degree burns your palm is not a lovely sight and it took months to heal, complete with physical therapy. After that, no more sparklers for us!

I wouldn't let a small child hold a sparkler just like I wouldn't let them play with a candle or a fireplace or anything else hot. That just seems like common sense to me.

We used them when we where little but we had the ones that automaticly go out and cant reach your hands

I'm a worse mom than you- my neices and nephews - well the X's are allowed to shoot off fireworks- right down to the 9 year olds (this has actually been going on for 2 years- so they were 7) ...my kids stay in the screen house at DMIL's house when they're shooting off fireworks, oh man do they get mad at me, I'm mean, Im the worst mom etc.. :confused3

I just remind them of Billy and his accident at their uncles house- and they get over it.

My kids have never held a sparkler, why would they?

We do sparklers every year but only mommy and daddy are allowed to hold them. The kids have to stand back so many feet to keep from coming anywhere near them.

They scare me so bad! I hate fire, so that in my hand is just too much.
