Only "x" number of seats left at this price

Is this a marketing ploy by the airlines? Could that mean that there could be a fare decrease that would have more seats at a new price? Or am I wishful thinking?

It simply means there are X number of seats available at that particular fare class. Will your airline open seats at a lower fare class? Who knows?

There were only so many seats offered in each price range to begin with.

As time passes, more seats may or may not be added to a price point.

No, it means that after the x number of seats at this price are sold, the remaining seats are far a higher price.

And remember if you're buying for more than one person, always start at 1 and see how many tickets are left at the lowest price. Because if you start with your whole group, the website won't say "3 at price $X, 2 at higher price $Y", it will just offer to sell all 5 tickets to you at higher price $Y.

The airline may or may not open more seats at that price, but what that "x number of seats remaining at this price" really does is create a sense of urgency to the customer so that they will go ahead and purchase the seat rather than "miss out". Fairly common sales tactic.
