I'm just so worried... this is our first trip to WDW and we just found out DH has Gout... he has been in a lot of pain, and is now on medication ... but that is just not helping his stomach. I'm worried about him having gout at such a young age, and I'm worried about our trip and what if he get worse.
Plus with 32 days to go and him being sort of out of commision ... with Halloween and Christmas coming up and with a 2.5yr DS & a 5.5yr DD I'm just so overwhelmed ... I can't wait for a vacation ... right now I would be happy just spending time at the hotel ... I don't even know if I'll have the enegry to do any touring.

just asking for some pixie dust

You poor thing. I can only imagine how both you and your DH must feel! My DH and I have gone and enjoyed the resort, WL and VWL as much as the parks. You didn't say where you were staying, but you sound like you need a break and it may do the DH good to get away, relax, enjoy the resort and HOT TUB---don't know anything about gout, but maybe that would help make him more comfortable---and who knows, maybe once you got there, you might feel up to touring---your DH could always rent one of those motorized scooters and still enjoy at least a part of WDW! Good luck to you, and we'll all say a prayer that the DH gets better, SOON! God Bless and TONS of Pixie Dust to you and yours!

My DH has gout. He had his first attack when he was around 24. His attacks usually only last about a week.

Some things to help:
1. Drink black cherry juice daily, but it does not taste good. :crazy2:
2. Eat less red meats
3. Take Allopurinol daily (but not during during attack)

I hope his pain goes away quickly and your trip goes great! :flower:

My DH has gout, too! He's 36, but thankfully he's only had about two episodes, both of which lasted about a week. His "trigger" seems to be too much red meat, so we really watch his intake!
It's our experience that if DH takes it easy during the attack, he rebounds pretty quickly, so if you can hang in there with your little ones for a week or so, your DH should be good to go for your trip!

Sending pixie dust for a quick recovery and sanity for you!!
:goodvibes

Remember that you can always use a wheelchair or rent a ECV. You might want to ask this question on the disABILITIES board. My husband had a huge flare up our first night at EPCOT. I didn't think I was going to get him back to the hotel! He was a real trooper that trip.

My DH also has gout and had his first attack in his early 20's. He takes Allopurinol and for bad attacks is on a heavy duty NSAID. He's also had to have cortisone shots into the joint area on his foot. He drinks the black cherry juice and watches intake of hard chees and meats. Try elevating the foot, warm soaks in a tub, a strong NSAID (call his doctor for a super duty one). Good luck and use a wheelchair or ECV if needed.

Cherries. You can get them frozen in the grocery. Start with 10 per day until the gout subsides then 3 per day for maintenence. Helps arthritist stiffness as well. My family swears by this.

I shouldn't have posted. I jinxed my DH. He now has the worst flare-up of gout he's ever had. He can barely walk, is in excruciating pain, and we leave in 26 days! YIKES! I told him he had to go to the doctor today to see about more blood work and a cortisone shot. I can't push him in a wheelchair and handle 3 five year olds at Disney. Some PD for him too please!

Oh NO!! I'm so sorry ... Dh is feeling a bit better ... he has been having some side affect from medication he is taking, like he gets nauseous & diahrea. I hoping he will be much better in 30 days

thank you for all the advice

Well let's hope both of our men are up and at 'em by the time we go! Maybe we'll see you there since some of our days overlap.

Oh Claude, I'm so sorry for yall. My dad and my brother both suffer from it. My brother had his first bout w/it in his 20's too.

Anywho, it should be gone by the time you leave. The cherry juice or just eating cherries works for my dad and brother. But thier triggers are pork, not red meat. If they eat pork for 2 or 3 days in a row they have a flare up. Same for shellfish. I hope I'm not adding to the confusion.

I know the medications for it have the stomach side effects. I'll ask my dad & bro. how they get around that, or at least minimize it's impact.

Good luck to you and your husband. Should he have an attack down there, I would definitely look into renting one of those carts. Tell him to be sure to put a steel box around his foot though so nobody steos on it, or breathes on it! And to take along a cane - not for walking but for poking people who get anywhere near the affected area! :rotfl: My dad said its so painful that air movement in the room going by it hurts. Ouch. I cant imagine.

My 35 year old DH just got his first bout of this a week ago! He woke me up at 4 a.m. to complain that his big toe was in terrible pain. I thought that was totally bizarre of course and didn't know what to do for him. He called his doctor and sure enough, found out it was gout. He also tried the cherry juice and cherry tablets he got at the health food store. It was going away but now as of last night, it's back! Will they battle this constantly? I've not heard of Allopurinal. Is it prescription or over the counter? He was also told to go on a diet and cut back on caffeine and red meat which I think he has this week. That's why I'm so surprised it's coming back. This is so frustrating. My children are also going through head lice at school! AAhhhh! I need a WDW trip soon...

Allopurinol is a Prescription medication it is used for the prevention of gout. Colchicine is another medication that is used for gout higher does during an attack and then a daily regime. Indocin is taken during an attack to help alleviate the symptoms.

My husband was put on Colchicine ... first week 4x a day and then only 2x day for the next 2 months and then he goes back to see how his uric Acid is doing ... but he is also drinking Cherry juice and watching his diet (which is really hard for him) ... It's been realy hard, we are now on week 3 and he is slowly feeling better. From what I understand this is something that he will have to deal with for the rest of his life... being only 34 we are going to try watching his diet and hoping he wont have to go on Meds to control it... only 28 days til we go to Disney, I'm hoping that this wont be an issue once we are there because it sure is painfull .

Lots of pixies dust for all !!

claude,

i forgot to mention, although the doctor probably told you too, that alochol (as in beverages - esp. beer) can aggravate it too. i'm so sorry.

oh, he has not had anything to drink (alcohol that is ) since CDN Thanksgiving ... that's when it first started

Dh had his first gout attack several years ago. At first, the bouts were only occasional, maybe one or two a year. Now, it has become an on-going battle. Dh closely watches what he eats/drinks and takes his meds regularly. Sadly, there really aren't any new or truly effective drugs for battling severe cases.

I will drink plenty of water to flush out your system. Msg sets mine off some times ,so I try to not eat it. Gout can be tamed, just watch your red meats and very fatty foods. Eat things that will clean the blood like green stuff. It will be alright and with end a week he should be walking normal again.

My DH has suffered with gout off and on for years since his 30's. He takes Colchicine (sp?) during an acute attack. He also tries to watch how much red meat and processed meats such as cold cuts that he eats. That seems to be a big trigger for him. I hope your DH feels better and you have a great trip.
