There was a post a while ago that had online shops for prom dresses. The search feature is not working for me. Has anyone shopped online for prom dresses and were successful? Can you recommend an online retailer? Looking at local shops for DD and not having any luck! Thanks!

Not for Prom but for Formal Gowns.

Nordstroms(can return to local store), David's Bridal

Check the size and the measurments for each dress. I mmeasure myself before I buy, my size tends to differ then my normal size;)

I also shop the sale pages

My daughter bought a prom dress online last year. The dress looked great on her, though when we took it for alterations, the seamstress pointed out that it was likely a 'sample'..it didn't have a lining. Honestly, for the money we saved, I'm not sure it mattered! It only cost about $60, looked fantastic on her..and who would really know otherwise? It was returnable, with a $20 return fee. We had decided it was worth the risk, and ended up glad that we did. (she is a twin! These proms get pricey!)

I recommended www.tidebuy.com for formal gowns. My younger sister bought her homecoming dress from them fall 2012, and will probably go through them the next two years (she's a sophomore in high school) for any other dresses she needs. Ordinarily I try to avoid sites like these (a lot of them are sketchy at best), but this one I know is good. If I can find them, I'll add pictures of the online dress/my sister's actual dress.
I bought my senior prom dress from Ebay, wish I kept the information from the seller because the dress was beautiful and exactly as pictured online.

Not sure if you have a Goodwill type store where you live but ours just did a BIG prom dress sale. Almost all the prom dresses were $20-$25 and they were recent styles (within a couple years). I shop for my clothes there sometimes too and ours has brand names like Gap, Banana Republic, Express, Limited.

Just be careful not to buy a knock off from china. They are all over eBay and the Internet. They are hideous and poorly made. If all you see is a stock photo and the price seems too good to be true, and it's from china, RUN the other way!

I ordered 9 dresses from Macys for my dd, one of them was the perfect dress for her. The other 8 I returned to the store with no problems. They had a large variety online, that we were not finding in local stores either.

I'd stick to ordering online from department stores. Dd16 found a dress online, but it had an horrible return policy ($25+ shipping, and there had to be a defect).

I don't know where you live, but we found her a dress at Group USA in Secaucus for only $120.
