Online Check In will not let me check in without a $1400 Incidental Hold

I've seen previous discussion about this, and I was attempting online check in to avoid check in lines upon arrival, but the system will not let me check in without putting down a $1400 Incidental Hold (200 per night for 7 nights), which I am not willing to do. We'll be traveling with 3 kids and one of them could easily lose their room cards, I would much rather pay for things with my own credit card or touchless Apple pay. Should I just wait to check in when we arrive?

I believe you have to check in in person to not have the hold placed. I have not tried cancelling it at the hotel after doing on line checkin because at that point the hold has already been placed.

Yes, I called them and they told me that. I went ahead and did the mobile check in because she said they could remove it at the desk when I go to pick up my keys.

Or you could just remove charging from the kids cards.

I could, but honestly I think a $1400 hold is a bit outrageous, unless it's expected I'll pay for every single meal and souvenir with my room key. I would rather pay as I go with my credit card.

I would be in shock and angry about getting this alert from my AX Card… Thanks for posting. I will have to keep track of this .
I think the “Hold” should be for the first night.
They can automatically quick process the Holds but for refunds or cancellation they take so long . Which means they hope you forget to check your statements.

I usually buy a Universal gift card from hotel gift shop when we arrive and use that. So I’m not whipping out my credit card all over the place. And easier to keep track of spending! Canadian $ is not great right now. Gone up a little but still loosing $.23ish on the dollar. Maybe more with forex.

I was planning to get a gift card of "Gringotts Notes" for my kids to use to buy souvenirs. I agree it's better not to be whipping out the CC constantly, and hotels do seem to be slow to process refunds in my experience.

This is first time I have had to rent a car . The Hertz placed 2 identical holds over a week ago and still has not released it . I called American Express and they placed a monitor to notify me if it is released and almost a week has gone by. I keep calling them and they put me on hold or say they will call me back or promise to send me the final billing and still nothing.
I I’ll never rent a car ever again.
