This falls in the unusual category. Since I can't quite start making reservations yet, should I start contacting our top picks for restaurants to find out if they can accommodate?
How do I flag this person in our group as having the allergy?

How severe is the allergy? If you have a member who simply cannot have onions, make your ADR's, note that there is an onion allergy, and then make sure you tell the CM when you check into the restaurant. The Chef will discuss what is safe and what is not on any given menu.

If the allergy is More severe, I suggest you head over to the DISabilities forum. Those folks will have advice that is more specific to your circumstances. They are very knowledgeable.

I have a friend with an onion allergy. It is a tough one as it is in so many sauces and bases. Disney will do well for you. Can they be at the same table as it?

Yes she can be at the same table, but cross-contamination is the kitchen is always a concern. She can't have fries if they fry onion rings in the same oil, using the same knife on her food, etc. DCL treated her great last year, we just had to order her meal the night before.
I guess I'm wondering if there are certain restaurants that we shouldn't even try to go to?

I don't think there are any restaurants that you need to avoid. They will all be able to accommodate her needs, but just realize that things like a contaminated fryer may mean no fried foods at some locations. I would imagine virtually all restaurants use onion in some capacity so just be sure to inform the chef so they can avoid cross contamination.

Disney will accommodate. I think Deb Wills did a review of H&V Holiday Dine with a friend who has an onion allergy and I remember it because I love onions and I'd die. It is on youtube if you want to try to searchf or it. Apparently pretty much EVERYTHING on most buffets have onions in it, but even at a buffet the chef will prepare an onion free feast... this is one that is nearly impossible to avoid on your own but easy for the chef to accommodate in the kitchen. Just note it on your ADR and the chef will come out and talk about your options.

A disney chef told me that they have a specific area in the kitchen that is used to prepare food for those with allergies, and they have specific cookware etc. The chefs are trained in over 40 food borne allergies, so I think that they will take care to keep you safe.

I would not avoid any restaurant, but there may be limitations on what the chef can serve you. I believe they wil make sure you have a good meal that is safe for you.

you are going to have more problems with counter serves than table serves. my guess is that anywhere serves French fries and onion rings she will have to skip the fries. most counter serves do a lot of prep ahead harder get stuff specially made. I would plan on as many table serves as possible better control of how food is handled
