Has anyone ever rented a car, drove down, dropped the car in Orlando then taken a one way flight back? I need to return mid week during president's week and the fares are are real cheap during the week and real expensive on the weekend. I am still gonna hold out for a good round trip fare but I am trying to keep my options open. Has anyone ever done this or thought of doing it? Can anyone think of any pitfalls with this idea?

There may be a substantial dropoff charge. While car rental companies do offer breaks on one-way rentals when THEY need to get the cars moved, they're way less likely to be that considerate in the middle of winter.

I just went to Nationalcar.com and picking the car up in CT and dropping it at the Swan was $82/day. Am I missing something? I don't see a drop off charge. Help!

What about Southwest going one way. Any issues there?

huskies90,

That rate sounds correct - doesn't look like you're missing anything.

What are the dates of your rental and what size car do you need?

Read the fine print and make sure you're getting unlimited mileage, or at least enough included miles. Some rental agencies limit the states you can drive as a condition for unlimited miles.

We actually did the reverse this past spring- flew down and drove back. Got an AMAZING deal from National on a minivan- $89/ week- at the end of April and drove it back to NJ, stopping off in Savannah and Charleston on the way- places that the airfare is ALWAYS too high to fly- what a deal. Hoping to do the same next spring. We even gave up our prepaid flight back to NJ to do this- it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

ITA with the above posters about checking re the states and mileage; however, at $82/day sounds like the drop off charge might be built in. Also, they might want the car to go to FL as peak rental season for FL will be cold weather time up north.
