Due to the cost of plane tickets, we are debating driving to WDW and then flying back. We would need a one way minivan rental, though, and they are proving quite expensive(over $500!). With that cost we might as well just suck it up and fly. We know we definitely don't want to drive there and back.

I am wondering if one way rentals are always so costly? Any tips for getting a cheap(ish) rental? A lot of the codes don't work for one ways.

There are cheap one way car rentals out of florida but it depends when you are travelling. It may be worth your while to fly down and drive back instead.

Unfortunately that won't work for us otherwise we would :( It has to do with how much school the kids would miss. We can leave driving Thursday night right after school and get there about the same time Friday we would if we flew. If we did it the other way around then we would have to cut a day and a half off.

From the description you have given, you might want to really work on taking the airlines. Prices are going to go up.

As soon as SW comes out on Monday that's the plan. Hopefully Airtran will come out the same day as well.

The norm is for a one way car rental to be quite expensive. You just have to be lucky when there happens to be a surplus of cars or a shortage of cars at one location and they run a promotion for one way rentals from or to that location.

You can get cheap one rentals between FL and the N during very limited time periods. From FL from the end of April -June. To FL in the fall.

is for Hertz. Other agencies have similar deals.

Agencies want to move cars into Florida for the winter months and out of Florida in the spring.

$500 is actually a good rate. A one way rate rental is typically going black out most discounts, have a one way fee and/or limit the number of free miles.

The agency wants to, directly or indirectly, charge you for putting excess miles on their vehicle. They also want to charge you for the cost of re-positioning a car to location that needs the vehicle. Take an extreme case. The rental agency wants the car back to where you rented it. Your one way fee pays the cost of getting the car back.
