Does anyone know if this can be done??
We were all set to drive to Boston and fly from there..I purchased our flights down last week with Air Tran. I get an email this morning with SUPER good deals from our home airport (Halifax,NS). I was thinking, is there anyway we could just rent a car from home and drive to Boston and leave it there..then we would fly from MCO to our home airport? :confused3

We did this just last month picked up from the Ottawa airport and dropper off at the Syracuse, nY airport. I even called to confirm with National and they said if it gives me a rate it can be done. No issues or questions at either airport. It was awesome we were able to fly out of Syracuse and then return back Ottawa.

Thanks! I found out Alamo does it from here. Our National doesn't. I'm really hoping to do this. West Jet had a great sale first thing this morning and by the time I was ready to book the seats went back up :sad1: At least I know this can be done so I'll be watching really closely at this option. Not doing the 10 hour drive home would be :cloud9:

Canada to the States...yes. One way from the States to Canada...No.

Make sure you check to see if they charge for miles or kilometers...some might be unlimited, some may charge.

DH and I did exactly this 15 years ago (rented at Sea-Tac dropped off at the Calgary airport. So just for kicks I tried doing the same thing on Alamo's website, and it allowed for a one-way rental from the States to Canada.

Maybe not all vendors do, but it appears that Alamo does

I think the policy only applies to Canadian citizen. I'm not sure if a Canadian isn't allowed to rent a car in the US and drive it into Canada or only isn't allowed to rent a car in the US and drop if off in Canada.

I'm not sure if it's an absolute rule or a policy.

Wowza :scared1: Just because I suffer from a little travel OCD, I tried doing this, saying I lived in Canada. And while you can pick up in Seattle, and drop off in Calgary, I'm not sure ANYONE would want to.

The price jumped for my 8 day rental from ~$400, to a hair rasing :scared1: $3200 :scared1::scared1:

I said I wasn't sure if it was a rental car policy or law that limited Canadians who want to rent a car in the US and drop off in Canada. A rate of $3200 kind of suggests a potential renter find alternate transportation.

I'm not going to take the time to search, I think the issue was a person not returning the car but literally paying the rental company for the car. I don't know if it was a way to get around some tax or other requirement.

I believe there is (or was) a Customs and Excise law that prevents(ed) Canadians driving US registered vehicles into Canada. I would check carefully before attempting.

You should be able to rent a Canadian registered vehicle in the US and take it back into Canada (based on availability).

Yes it is a law that a Canadian cannot drive a US plated car into Canada. Just over a year ago we were on vacation in Myrtle Beach and because of an accident we had to rent a car from the US to return home. We got special permission to cross the border and had to show a police report and pictures of my van before being allowed in.
