I understand dvc members can make a one time purchase of points per year (up to 24) if they fall short on what they need for their vacation. I do have some questions though:

-I think I read that this cannot be done until the 7 month mark? Is this true and if so how does that work if I want to make a reservation at my home resort at 11 months but need a few extra points to make the reservation at that time (let's assume I don't want to borrow from the next year if I don't have to)

-is this allowed one time per member or per member number? The reason I ask is what if I have small contracts at a couple different resorts because I want to stay at particular resorts at particular times of the year. Can I purchase 24 extra points for EACH of those contracts within one years time?

-lastly, how would it work and how easy is it to get a transfer of points from another member as an alternate way of getting points? Can I rent points from a member in time to still be able to book at my 11 month window? Would the points just transfer into my account to make one lump sum of points? And could I make one transfer per year to EACH of my contracts?

We are still looking at purchasing dvc but asking lots and lots of questions (as many of you have seen haha!!!)...including how our vacation needs may change in the next 10 years when kids are off to college. DH and I would still enjoy going but could go in the off season to really stretch smaller point contracts further and would also likely do more things like food and wine and want to be near an Epcot resort, that kind of thing...

Thanks again for helping me with all my inquiries!!!

This is true. You cannot purchase the one-time points from Disney until you enter the seven-month window. And you must have all the points to make a reservation. So if the reservation you need to make is hard to get, your best bet would be to bank or borrow and make your reservation at 11 months out.

Transferred points retain their home resort and UY. So if you wanted to make a BWV reservation, you'd have to get a transfer of BWV points to be able to use the home-resort window.

Per member number. If you have different UYs on your contracts you will have multiple member numbers. But I don't think you can combine any of them until 7 months.

Transfers. You get 1 in or out each year per member number. I think that even if you have to transfer between your own contracts this may apply. You might have a hard time finding another member willing to use their 1 time transfer for a relatively small amount. Transferred points do retain their UY and are bankable so if you arrange a transfer for more than you need you can bank any excess points. Just make sure they are bankable and not going to expire before you use them.

Renting may be better. You should be able to find a member to rent 1 or 2 nights to coordinate with your existing reservation and have MS link them.

The OTUP will not have Home Resort status for any resort so cannot be used to make a reservation until within 7 months.

It is per membership. If you have all contracts under one membership number, you can purchase up to 24 points once during your Use Year. If you have multiple Use Years, you will have multiple memberships and can use the OTUP purchase for each membership.

The membership limitation already described will apply to this question too. You may make one transfer (either in or out) per membership per Use Year. If you accept a transfer from another member, the points may be used at 11 months for the Home Resort of those points and they may be banked for an additional year. Right now, you can accept a transfer of 2013 Use Year points into your 2013 Use Year or 2014 Use Year points into your 2014 Use Year.

Good luck with your planning! :)

I'm considering the purchase of a resale. There aren't quite enough points. Will Disney sell me the extra points I need if my initial purchase is from a resale? Thanks!

Owning a resale contract doesn't stop you from purchasing a direct contract from Disney. They want your money.

Yes, minimum is 25 points for a direct add-on.

Yes. I'd figure out about how many points you think you'll need each year and even get a few more as a safety net (you can also figure in the 24 OTUP allowance). While the minimum is 25 points, an add-on purchase does not need to be any preset number of points - you could purchase 28, 33, 49, etc. to meet your needs.

Purchasing a small number of points from DVC directly can be cost effective as there are not many small resale contracts readily available and most are priced higher than larger contracts on a per point basis. The direct add-on will also be in your current Use Year.

Enjoy! :)

Yes, you can buy one time use points if you bought resale.

Assume I have 100 points available in my current UY and 100 in the next UY. If I want to make a 120 point reservation at 6 months, I know I can borrow 20 points, but if I want to avoid using those points, can I elect to buy 20 points from MS?

Yes

I bought one time use points last year and it was great. I only needed a few to complete my reservation and it was a fast easy process. We have added on in the past and still found ourselves short for a particular trip. They are a great option in a pinch.

are the one time points 'trapped' in that use year or can you bank them if plans change?
