Do you ever feel like everytime you take a step forward financially you take two backwards? That's what this summer has felt like. I am really ready for Sept. This summer we have a child going off to college, I knew dorm stuff would add up, but I've spent more than I anticipated, then our air conditioner went out (13K), then last night my husband had to go to the emergency clinic, he was then transported to the hospital. Thankfully, he was able to be released this afternoon after going through a procedure this morning. I'm sure that bill will be quite high even with insurance, we haven't met our deductable yet. I am sure we have now though. LOL! Trying not to get too down. Just seems like we get ahead to that magic number we have set for ourselves and then poof, a big expense. Thanks! End of pity party and rant!! I am just thankful we have it in the emergency fund!! Time to squeeze our belts and start saving.

Most important is your DH. We are just like you. At least we have a roof over our head and food to eat.

Your summer sounds a bit like mine! All in one day in May: my daughter accidently threw away her $400 retainer (I searched through 30 bags of school lunch trash but didn't find it), DS got a $170 speeding ticket (which he will pay along with any increase in insurance costs), and my master bedroom walk in closet imploded. The shelving and bars completely pulled out of the walls, damaging the drywall and leaving all the clothes in a heap on the floor. We haven't had a chance to buy all the supplies to fix it yet. We need a whole new closet system. In June our dishwasher top rack stopped cleaning and our ice maker stopped working. I watched a youtube video and ordered a part for the dishwasher. I was going to put it in this weekend but....I had some sort of gastro attack starting Saturday ending Monday, spent Sunday night in the ER (where they gave me pain and anti nausea meds, ran tests). Saw the surgeon on Monday. My gall bladder came out today. We have high deductible health insurance for the first time this year (it was all DH's company offered this time around). We probably met the deductible but we don't have all the cash in the health savings account to cover it yet. We would have had it all in there by year end. I don't even want to see those medical bills! And we also have a kid going to college in the fall - a boy, so lots less to buy thankfully. I get a big raise starting in August because I am taking on more responsibilities at work. I won't see a penny of that money until we get all the bills paid off.

We've just got to hang in there!!!!

Something is going on....I totaled our van on July 3. No one hurt, thank God, but not the greatest thing to happen. The van was paid off, so back to a car payment...bought a used one (still needed a van) so at least the payment is smaller. Looking at an increase in insurance as well as the ticket. I'm headed to court to try and negotiate the points. DD18 headed to college in Sept. The college "stuff" isn't too bad because he's a boy (sheets, towels, and an electric mattress pad so far). He's going to MN and we're in NJ, so travel will take a chunk of money. DD16 will be a junior and we're gearing up for college visits for her....SC and FL schools top the list. It's just money, right??? :scared:

It always seems that when it rains, it pours. Doesn't it? I'm sure that you're counting your blessings.
  • You have a son who is going off to college! My nephew passed away in March. He didn't get to graduate from high school.
  • $13K is a lot to spend on any home maintenance, but you were able to absorb the financial hit and you're not forced to endure a summer without air conditioning.
  • Your husband had a medical incident that is going to prove to be costly. But he is going to be fine and around to enjoy many more years of milestones for your family.
I think that it's great that you have a magical number that you strive to save for. Just remember that an emergency fund is for most of the expenses that you've listed. Be thankful that you have that cushion to fall back on. There are a lot of people who would trade places with you, even with your recent financial burdens.

So sorry to hear about your nephew and yes, we do count our blessings. Both of us grew up in families that lived pay check to pay check. We are very lucky we have the resources we have. My husband isn't completely out of the woods yet, but hopefully it won't be anything major when we get back his results. Still it is frustrating.
