I had made our rental car reservation thru Expedia and got a very good rate for our upcoming May trip. I then remember we could get a discounted rate as a perk to our DVC membership and called on it today. I was very surprised to find that even with the discount, it was still over $20.00 more than thru Expedia. He told me they only get a discount thru Alamo. The person I talked to was not suprised when I told him this. I was surprised by this though. I was under the impression DVC had enough pull to get us members better rates at car rentals. Am I being overly optamistic(sp)??

I think they probably work with Alamo only as it is (I think) an 'official' rental car company with Disney.

1) Car rental discounts depend upon the amount of rentals.
2) Organizations that supply more renters get the better rates.
3) It is strictly a matter of who can supply more business.
4) I work for a company that guarantees "X" rentals per year.
5) The discount is UNBELIEVABLE.
6) Consider rental cars as commodities, and go with the best price.

NOTE: I seriously doubt that DVC could supply enough rentals to get the best discount rate. a) Not all DVC'ers will go to the same rental company, which reduces the number of rentals for a single company. b) Many (maybe most) DVC'ers use Disney transportation and don't even rent a car.

You are probably right. The only reason we rented a car is on our last trip, we were located in BLDG. 46 at OKW and the rental we got then sure made it easy to get to the HH and just gave us more freedom in general...smjj

We niver thought bldg 46 was that far from HH. It only took a few minutes to walk it. I do like having a car though, for those trips to the other resorts for a dinner ressie. I hate having to bus through DTD to get back to the resort!

There is FREEEEEEEEEE trans from the airport to the hotels starting may -5th. I just confirmed my pickups today. They even take your bags to the resort. They are mailing me tags for my bags.

I've done the comparison before and always found better rates on my own using codes found on mousesavers.com or via the car rental's website.

If the real motive is to keep people on site, why would they want to get memebers too good a rental car rate?

In the travel industry, there are a LOT of "discounts" which are not really discounts at all -- or they're not the best you can do. For example, I've made reservations three times in the last two years for my MIL, and every time -- both air and rental car -- the "senior discount" price was more than what was available to any customer who had sense enough to check Expedia or one of the other similar services.

You can get some great deals travelling, but you sure better pay attention!

Checkout the car rental discount codes on Mousesavers. I have a full size reserved with National for May 7 to 13 with the priceless vacation contract code and a $20 Entertainment coupon. Total including all taxes $109.

Car rental discounts are not on the list of member perks.

In May the new "Magical Express" is starting.

If I flew I would definitely go that route - yes it would be hard to get groceries but hey with netgrocery and that other one - the only things you would need to pay WDW prices are milk, eggs and meats.

I have flown in a long time - and I don't know when I will again.... :rolleyes1

I have never used a DVC rate for a car as they have always been higher than the Disney VISA, any mousesavers rates or the rate I get with AVIS thru RCI or my employer.
