One Ohana Opinion (TLDR; wouldn't go back)

For some perspective, here' a list of all the restaurants that we dined at on our recent trip that wrapped up yesterday: Narcoosee's, Mama Melrose, Hollywood Brown Derby, San Angel Inn, Garden Grill, Pecos Bill's Tall Tale Inn, 1900 Park Fare, Tusker House, Tiffins, Skipper Canteen, Cinderella's Royal Table, Boma, The Boathouse, Trattoria al Forno, Paddlefish. So I guess you can say that 1) we eat a lot of meals and 2) we try a variety of experiences. We are two adults and 3 8-year olds.

Overall we felt Ohana was the most disappointing meal. The bread was good as was the salad. Out of the appetizers, the dumplings were good but I felt the noodles were too sweet, and the wings were just OK and the mini-corn and other vegetables were just kind of there and generic. For the mains, the chicken was fine, but the beef was terrible. The steak was so tough that it was almost impossible to chew. This wasn't the case of a single skewer either - I had asked for more from a different one to see if it was just one bad piece. I don't know what the deal was but the cuts of meat were just terrible - they weren't overcooked either - it was just extremely tough meat.

The bread pudding dessert was pretty good even though I don't like banana all that much.

As for the entertainment, I thought it would perhaps last a little longer than a short spiel by the entertainment guy and then the quick coconut race. Our server was good and attentive and came around several times to offer us more food.

As a whole, I thought the experience was pretty underwhelming. The overly sweet Asian cuisine feels a bit dated (but that might be part of the charm for some) and the "entertainment" was short-lived. I guess considering that the Poly is a deluxe resort, I was expecting a bit more. A lot of people seem to like it, so I acknowledge that what they are doing appeals to a larger audience. I guess for us we were expecting it to be better.

We have the same opinion as well. When we went in 2015, we waitied over an hour for our table, the steak wasn't good, but the biggest issue I had was I told them I was allergic to shrimp and they brought it to the table 3 times. Every time I told the server that I was allergic. It just turned me off completely. I did love the bread pudding though!

Couldn't agree more! It was also the most underwhelming meal of our last vacation!

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience! We've been to Ohana a few times for dinner and we've never had even a middling experience, it's always been great for us. Hopefully your Skipper's Canteen experience was better! That's one of our favorites!

'Ohana has always been a must do for my family, and while it was never my favorite, I never resented the cost.....until the last time. It was a disaster from start to finish, and not even the bread pudding could make any of us wnat to go back.

I am not sure if 'Ohana is a victim of it's own success or if the management there needs a vast overhaul, but the hit or miss experiences there are an indication that something is wrong.

Our experiences have been at least acceptable with the quality ranging from just okay to excellent. While I would not tolerate that kind of roller coaster dining at home, I was willing to with 'Ohana because the family liked it. IMO, that inconsistancy was indicative of mismanagement, but lately the comments that range from "excellent" to "Horrible" show that something needs to be addressed internally.

We love Stitch, Pluto and Mickey - went for breakfast and it was perfect for us. It is a tradition for us to go on leaving day now.

Were there others at your table who could eat shrimp? If yes I would expect the server to bring it to the table so they could enjoy some. I would expect that if you ate at 'OHana you are not so allergic that even the smell triggers a reaction or you wouldn't be there at all.

I guess we have been lucky. We have eaten there twice in the last few years, and both times 3 out of 4 people in the party said it was their best WDW meal of the trip. One even said the steak was a particular favorite. The other person is not a big fan of the food there in general. Let's hope our streak continues as I don't need another WDW restaurant to move to our "take a break from" or "never again" list!

We love staying at the Polynesian but after last year's experience at Ohana we probably won't dine there for a while. We were sooo disappointed :( The service was pretty bad and we noticed a few of the tables around us were having the same experience. Servers took forever to show, would disappear for long stretches, food was cold and delivery was spaced too far apart. I agree with one of the earlier posts that it seems like a management issue. I hate to even write this post but we really want to love Ohana.

Excuse my ignorance, but what does "TLDR" mean?

Well, I have stated this many times here. Ohana is our favorite WDW restaurant. We have eaten there more than any where else. I have never had bad food there, just the opposite, but we have experienced some bad service.

This may be silly, but I have had trouble getting butter for the bread out of some servers. We dined there the first few times without getting any, and I didn't think they offered it. Then, we went one time, and the server brought this wonderful macadamia nut butter. So delicious.

Next time we went, I asked for it, and the server told me that we didn't need it because the bread tastes fine by itself. I asked her to bring it anyway, and she never did. I asked for it another visit, and it was never brought to the table even though the server promised to bring it.

This was years before the cost saving measures of Iger. Why is the butter so elusive?

Anyway, I'll be back in September. My baby nieces love the entertainment. I'm holding out hope that the management will come to their senses and bring back Lipoa by then.

Educated guess but I've had that incredible macadamia nut butter with the Kona Cafe bread. Possibly that server had a habit of requesting the Kona butter from the kitchen? Other servers don't want to be bothered taking the time to do so? ps it is wonderful butter.:thumbsup2

IDK. I have never eaten at Kona. I think that the two places share some kitchen space. I have read that the wings are the same.

I agree, DH and I dined at 'Ohana once, and it is the one restaurant we will never return to. We actually joke when we don't like a meal somewhere else that 'at least it wasn't as bad as 'Ohana.' We brought family on a trip a couple years ago, and told them to select the restaurants they wanted to go to and we would make the reservations, the one caveat was that if they chose 'Ohana they were on their own, and we would be eating separately that night.

Same for us. We tried it and we very unimpressed. The food was not good. The atmosphere was chaos. The shrieking person with the ukelele was torture. They seated us (just DH and I) on the racetrack where the coconut races got hrough and we were constantly bumped, shoved and subjected to the screaming, jockeying for position, pushy parents and upset kids participating. We waited 45 minutes past our ADR to be seated, BUT on the plus side our server was great!

I'm glad we tried it, but unless it undergoes some major change we will leave those ADR's for others to enjoy.

Too Long, Didn't Read. It indicates the poster is giving a one sentence summary of a long post for those that don't want to read the whole thing.

Thanks. I get it. IOW, the OP is saying that if you don't want to read something long, you may not want to bother opening the thread.

We used to love it but that was many years ago--probably 25 years or more. There's not enough variety of food for my family any longer, I can't see us going back. Help yourself to my ADR ;)
