Lonely New Jersey Emu Pines for Dead Mate

(1010 WINS) ROXBURY, N.J. -- An emu whose mate was killed by a truck on Route 80 is pining away for his lost love.
Mimi, the female of the pair, walked out of her pen and onto the nearby highway on Sunday evening. Mimi's owners, Ron and Jackie Hamilton, are devastated. So is Mau-Mau, the surviving bird.
"I'm heartbroken, but Mau-Mau is even more heartbroken," Hamilton, 64, of Wharton, told The Star-Ledger of Newark. "I've spent the day talking to him and petting him. He's so sad and keeps pacing, looking for her, waiting for her to return."
State police say the large flightless bird darted from the center median into the eastbound lanes and ran into a trailer pulled behind Michael Egan's 2002 Dodge Durango. She was knocked back into the median, where she died. Egan, of Chester, N.Y., was not injured.
"I just figured she'd come back sometime overnight or by the morning," Hamilton said. "When I found out she was dead, I didn't have the heart to tell my son. I just told him she hit the road."
