If i have a person in my party of 4 decide not to ride something we all have FPs for, do i need them to tap their Magic Band at the ride to book more same day FPs

That is the easiest way, yes. If you want to book the same ones for everyone, everyone has to have used, or allowed to expire, their first 3. If they dont tap in you will have to wait until the whole window passes, plus a little, for it to hopefully expire and drop off. If they tap in you can grab a 4th right away.

Let someone ride again with the unused one.

Yep, that would be option 1 for me. But sometimes it's not practical or nobody wants to ride again while the others wait. So then option 2 is to either have the non-rider tap and walk away or have someone in your party tap for them. I do this for DW sometimes, as she's not into coasters. I'll put her MB on my other wrist. When I get to the tap point, I tap them both. Sometimes I'll give the kids a laugh by acting like a ninja and tapping one arm on each of the two tap points at the same time...LOL.

I would definitely have them keep the FP for the 3 rides. If somebody wants to ride again, they can use the FP, if not have them tap to use the FP, but not enter the line.

If you see someone solo walking by, you could pixie dust them in with that FP+ and just take the MB back after the second tap point.

My kids our bands when we don’t ride
They go twice
And we did give our fast passes away to a couple on soarin once

You can also cancel it. If you cancel it before it starts, someone else will probably be able to book it.

Ah, I was thinking of MK. In that case, what we do is book a throwaway fp for something that doesn’t need a fp for that person, that way we aren’t taking away the option from someone else to skip a line. Things like the Muppets 3D, Disney Junior dance party, Bugs Life film, and the Pixar short films.

So instead of staying together with the family/party the person not riding has to walk all the way over to a different attraction to tap in vs just tapping in and not riding with the party?

I would just book everyone together and have the non rider tap in and use the "chicken exit" or have someone tap in for them if nobody wants a re-ride. I have had rides and shows stay on MDE in the past when we try to let them expire and it messes up booking of a 4th, imho its best to use the FP (or tap in).

No, you don’t have to leave your group and tap in to book a 4th. It just has to be expired. I’ve only had an issue once with an untapped fp, and I’m a local who goes frequently. It’s just considerate to other guests to refrain from booking a fp for something that needs it if no one is planning to use it just to get around the tier rules. There’s a limited number of fp+ and lots of people who would love get one and actually use it to skip the line.

You may be one of the lucky ones. We have had issues with expired FPs not releasing.
If you read the threads, this seems to be a common theme for many others as well. Whether they expire or are cancelled, MDE does always recognize that and you are unable to get another FP without help from IT. Tapping them without riding deson't seem to have the same issue.

I am an AP holder and go often as well and I have had issues on more than one occasion with FP not expiring properly even with shows, I am no longer willing to take that chance.

I don't see anything wrong with keeping my party together especially if its just one person not actually riding. Getting a FP+ for my entire family is not skirting the tier rules. Maybe it will make it just a bit quicker for the SB line!

If my nephew doesn't want to ride TOT IMHO its fine for him to either use the chicken exit or tap in and wait at the exit so he can continue to enjoy the same FP selections as the rest of us for the remainder of the day. There is no way I am going to make him a separate FP for a "lesser desired" attraction and then send him over to tap in there while we ride!

As others have said, many have tried just letting their 3rd FP "expire" only to find doesn't actually drop off so they are unable to book the 4th FP. So the best strategy is to book a 3rd FP and go ahead and tap in even though you aren't actually going to ride/see the attraction. It stinks, but Disney has set it up to work this way.

In a perfect world you could book this 3rd/"throw away" FP for an attractions that (1) is physically close to where you'll be at the time so you can tap in without walking across the park and (2) is a less popular attraction so you don't feel like you're taking a FP away from someone who really wants it. But you can't always have both. Choose whatever works better for you!
