...thanks to Spotty, our just over 1 year old cat.
We keep the two parakeets on our screened patio. They have a cage, but I always keep the cage door open, so they can go in and come out as they please. We have done it this way for ages, and it has been fine. We have also always left the sliding glass door unlocked, since we live on the third floor.
Anyway, at about 3 am this morning, I am woken to the sound of one of the brids screaming inside the house. I immediatley get up and run to the living room, and notice the patio door is open wide enough for either of our cats to get out. Next I find Spotty the cat with the screaming bird in his mouth! feathers are everywhere. I smacked Spotty on the back until he let go, then I threw him and Honey (the other cat, who had been watching the whole scene with keen interest) into the bedroom and close the door.
Amazingly enough, there was no blood to be found anywhere, and the only damage I could find was that her long tail feathers were gone. I think he must have picked her up by that, I'm not sure though. After some time, I was able to get her back onto the patio. When I checked on her a little later, she was on her perch next to the other bird (who I found holding on to the topmost part of the screen right after the attack...looked like he was holding on for dear life!)
It's been twelve hours since the attack, she is still alive, but very quiet and sitting in her cage, not moving much. When I came home, she was in the corner of the cage, she moved after I changed the food and water, but I haven't seen her eat (though I have been at work all day.) If anyone knows much about parakeets out there, do you thin kshe will be okay? I know she likely doesn't have any serious injuries now (she did fly away from me right after the attack) but I am worried about her well being...I want her to eat and be healthy and happy, after all.
Any advice is apperciated...oh, and that door will be locked from now on!!! I can only guess as to how the cat got it open...I suspect a certain DH was not real careful in making sure it was closed.

. Your keet was very lucky. I hope she perks up soon.
I feel so terrible about it. She and the other bird really seemed to love each other.
