I can imagine both. Actually, I have less faith in fellow guests understanding light etiquette...hence the OP's original problem.

We both know the same amount of information regarding FP+ as it stands right now. Neither opinion is wrong....just different. I don't hate SDMT. I think it will look awesome, but maybe somewhat misplaced.

Youth of the Nation (it's also a song ) The list would be too long to discuss in great detail but I can think of one example right off the top of my head.

Said Youth has AP....cousin in from out of state....they go to Disney...tries to show him the best time possible (but that would only happen if you can actually get more than 3 FP+ so this is hypothetical)...book as many rides that is allowable.....regardless of where you are. That's just one of countless scenarios that are possible.

And I am far from a youth..... but I'm pretty sure they are different now.

Maybe stop the ride, shine a spotlight on the person, and have a booming voice come over the speakers saying "NO FLASH PHOTOGRAPHY!" in several languages.

I think that might work.

We were on Carousel of Progress once and a woman in the first row was videoing it. After several announcements of 'Please, no photography" with no response from her they stopped the ride and announced it a few more times until the person with her told her 'they mean YOU.' She then turned it off and the ride continued.

It's annoying yes, but I've never seen anyone actually kicked out for it. At the beginning of carousel of progress, they say stay off your phones; no cell phone use, or something to that effect. The dude in front of me looked through every vacation photo he's ever taken on his phone during the entire carousel of progress. I wanted to kick him in the head.
So I really doubt that once FP+ plus is rolled out that all of a sudden disney is going to encourage cell phone use in shows like that. In fact, I think with even more phones they're gonna be even more adamant about asking people to turn them off during dark rides etc.

Just had to say one thing--I used to be notorious for getting mad and complaining to a theater management about people on their cell phones! Then one day it dawned on me...I'm missing more of the movie complaining than I do being distracted by their phone!!

Point in case: I feel like calling someone out takes more away from my enjoyment of the ride than them flashing or being on a cell phone and as such am not likely to say anything! Just my point of view but if someone does say something I can't blame them (even though they're sort of being disruptive as well) everyone just has their own way of dealing with things!

I agree we will probably see/hear more warnings about the phone being off during rides, etc but I agree with Mad Hattered that we'll see more of it, regardless of the announcements. People will be people. They do it now with no regard for others or the announcements, and there's typically no consequence to it.

Another scenario I can think of where I can see this happening is if there's been a change in a family's plans for the day and they are trying to sort out their FP+ reservations now. Maybe they missed one, or need to change one on the fly. The adults who aren't always so much into the rides might find it to be a good time to get on the app and sort out the FP+ ressies. I wouldn't drag out my phone on a ride, but I do get a little bored on POTC from time to time. I can't be the only one.

Another scenario would be that first time naive Disney family who's never heard of MDE or FP+ before arriving at WDW. Due to naivety or lack of research, they didn't make any advanced ressies and are now scrambling day-of, using all opportunity (including slow moving rides!) to do so.

While I agree we must wait and see what happens with FP+, increased cell phone usage on rides is a strong possibility. It is what it is.

Wow, Michigan must really be behind the times. The Zero Tolerance cell phone policy has been in effect here in the Midwest for 2 years now.


Officials with Wehrenberg Theatres say when the announcement was made Friday some movie goers actually applauded.

The St. Charles-based company says as cell phone screens have gotten bigger, theyve gotten more complaints.

Instead of blocking phone signals as some movie chains have done, Wehrenberg is asking patrons to put their phones on vibrate.

If theyre caught talking or texting, theyll be asked to leave without a refund.

Spokeswoman Kelly Hoskins says theyre stepping up monitoring, and so are other movie goers.

"What were finding guests are telling on each other, because people want to sit in a dark, quiet environment for a movie that they just paid a nice ticket price for," Hoskins said.


Like, I stated....don't expect Disney to kick people out of the park like a movie theater. Aren't facts fun? And kicking someone in the head once again makes you sound like an extremely pleasant person.

Wait a minute! I was going to reply, but after wading through 15 pages, I've forgotten the topic! Was it just to vent?

Justify it any way you want in regards to children being scared, but I still see the glow, and it is distracting from the ride experience.

IMHO, a glow stick is much less distracting than a screaming, panicked child. I don't expect her parents to know in advance how little Susie will react to a ride, & I appreciate them bringing the glow stick just in case.

Someone took a picture? big deal, I guess they wanted to capture the moment...

Yep, in one of my less good moments, I finally did nicely ask someone if she had an option to take pictures without flash. I do consider her having ruined my IASW ride this trip with her never-ending continual flashes at eye level less than a foot diagonally behind my head. But I have been to WDW before, and will again, while she might not have this luxury, so I now wish I would not have not said anything and just closed my eyes. IASW doesn't qualify as dark, so said lady was perfectly within her rights to capture her memories in such a manner. I'll try to be nicer in the future and just find a time for a "make up" IASW ride to enjoy.

One or two quick photos isn't usually what gets people upset its the non stop flashes trough the whole ride so much so that others cannot enjoy the ride.

But these days, the norm is to document every moment, not live it!

I looooove my dark rides! POTC, HM, etc... My sister's kids, all under 9, are afraid of the dark at some point, but love BTMRR! So, I think the integrity of the DARK ride needs to be maintained for people like me - that's all I ride!

Me too. The true dark rides no longer exist most of the time, due to the flash flash flashing. And go to a show, and you see the same from all around the theater. The world has changed. I don't think it is possible to turn back time, so the dark ride may be on its way out as an enjoyable experience. But perhaps there is some way Disney could encourage less flashing (and talking) aside from just the announcements which may not be noticed or understood by many guests. Could Disney could hire a few psych majors to devise ways to enhance the structure of the queue area in such a manner that by the time the ride starts the guests are more drawn into the moment (and have tucked their evil flash demons, er cameras and phones, away?)

While it may not be "dark", WDW does specifically say "Flash photography not allowed" in the IASW ride information.

Funny, when I turn on my phone and see that there is "no signal" I don't bother with trying to use Internet. I guess it's a common sense thing. . And my response was specifically in reference to the discussion regarding trying to use FP+, which requires a connection. I'm sure if my 13 year old students can figure out that their phones don't work in my classroom, adults might surely be able to figure out that there is no signal on the ride, so no use trying to get FP+.
