We are going with kids to Universal for a long weekend in September, but kids will leave early early Monday morning. DH and I haven’t been to WDW since November 2019.
1- with the recent availability of ROTR is it worth it to buy a one day ticket for our Monday and try it out? (Hopefully!)
2- Would you splurge and get a PH ticket since all parks seem to have less waits??

FWIW we have unused 4 day regular tix waiting to be applied towards APs but I’m not ready to purchase yet as our Universal APs expire in March and I’m trying to make a shorter overlap

1. If ROTR is your only reason for doing HS, you could be in for a disappointment. WDW is experiencing historically low crowds right now which is why boarding groups have been readily available. I wouldn't count on those crowd numbers remaining low.
2. Park hopping cannot begin until after 2 PM. That's going to put limitations on how many parks you will be able to visit in a day. But if doing HS in the morning and F&W at Epcot in the afternoon interests you, you could conceivably cap off the evening with fireworks at MK and catch HEA. I would not purchase hopping with expectations of low wait times at other parks.

My advice would be to purchase a 1-day base ticket. Reserve HS for that day. Try for a ROTR boarding pass at 7 AM. If you're not successful, chances are good that you will be able to change your park reservation to another park. If you still want to hop after 2 PM, you can visit guest services and add it.

If I don’t get a BG can I just cancel my park reservation and save my tickets for another time? Or transfer them to someone else?

ETA - I’m keeping up with recent trip reports and expect an increase in crowds over Labor Day but we would be there the next weekend, technically the Monday after Labor Day

An unused ticket can be transferred to another guest via MDE (they need to be a part of your Friends & Family). There is no penalty for canceling a park reservation. However, your unused ticket will disappear from your MDE after its expiration date. You would need to contact ticketing or go to guest services to assign it a new date. If the new day costs more, you will have to pay the difference. If it costs less, you will not get a refund.

If I pick a random day out on the future to move my ticket to can I change it over the phone if I need it sooner?
