DH and I are taking a short trip next week and only have one park day planned. I am hoping to purchase that one day ticket today to schedule our FP+.

My questions is upon arrival (a few days before our one park day) can I upgrade my one day ticket to an AP (and purchase a TiW card) without actually having used the one day ticket. I would like to receive the benefit of dining and merchandise discounts for the whole length of our trip.

I plan to just purchase the one day ticket through the Disney website and have it at "will call".

Yes as long as you are not trying to price bridge a discounted ticket, you don't need to use the ticket first. Keep in mind the AP will expire a year from upgrade date, not first use.

What is the advantage of buying a one day ticket, not using it and then upgrading it versus simply jumping straight to the AP? I could see why one would do this if they already purchased the one day ticket and had it in hand. But if you haven't yet purchased the ticket, why not just buy the AP without going through the upgrade process?

I agree, with the trip only a week away it's probably not one of those situations where someone is needing more time to save up for the AP. I would just buy that now and use the voucher number to make FP+ selections.

It's the opposite. When you upgrade a MYW ticket to an AP, it's a year from the first use of the MYW ticket, not the upgrade date.

OP wrote that they aren't using their one-day ticket first. I question why they would pick up their ticket from will call, not use it, then upgrade it to AP. Why not just buy the AP online and pick it up at will call, or... just buy the AP at the Disney ticket booth when they arrive, since they aren't price-bridging.

I assumed it was because they wanted to be able to get FP+ for the one day without having to put out the cost of an AP in advance.

Since it's only a one day ticket, the first use date and the upgrade date is really a moot point. They have to upgrade it that day or it has no value if used. I just wanted to point out the remark "Keep in mind the AP will expire a year from upgrade date, not first use" in general is not true. Someone was upset last week because they planned to upgrade their MYW ticket to an AP at the end of their trip, thinking they would have one year from the upgrade date for their trip next year.

I too don't see the benefit of buying the one day pass, just get the AP and get all the privileges of it right away.

I am not so sure this is the case, we just upgraded our MYW tix this past December and our AP's will expire on the anniversary of the upgrade date.

Then you lucked out. In the case I mentioned, they had a 7 day MYW and wanted to upgrade to an AP on the 7th day. They got full credit for the price of the 7 day but it was backdated to the first use. If they used the 7th day as the effective date, they would have got the 7 days they used free because the full MYW price was subtracted from the price of the AP. They wanted to be able to come the same week next year.

You get full credit for your entire MYW ticket when using it as a credit toward upgrading to AP. That's why they date the AP to first use of the MYW ticket. Your CM screwed up, ahem... gave you pixie dust. But that's not Disney policy. As PP said, that would be like getting your MYW used days for free in addition to getting credit for them towards your AP. You got a lucky break that time only.

Thank you for all the responses!

The reason I was just going to get a one day ticket now is that is all DH is getting (won't be upgrading to an AP) so I thought it might be "easier" to get us the same tickets. Is that not the case? Plus I was unsure of how FP+ is working for AP holders (we are staying onsite via rented DVC points).

Are any of those concerns valid or is it truly just as easy to buy the AP (for me) and the one day ticket (for DH) now?

Also...I will need to activate the AP to purchase the TiW, right?

It really doesn't make a difference, even if you buy the AP now, you still have to go to a ticket booth or guest relations to activate it. You can purchase the TIW at the same time, go to a guest relations for both.
