As the solo adult with my two dd's, 9 and 11. Its only a 2 hour drive and we are going in for the day possibly overnight to do the American Girl Place and see the AG theater show.

Obviously there are a million things to do in NYC but what is appropriate, easy (and safe) to get to and fun to help fill the rest of the day.

Since we recently moved to this srea we will definately visit again with dh when we will be more comfortable venturing to more of the sights and have more time.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions of other things close to that area for our "girls day out" I would love to hear them.
Thanks,
TJ

If you are only there one day maybe plan to see things that are close to the american girl store...do the empire state building, rockefeller center (you could ice skate if its still cold enough), see Times Square.

If you go to rockefeller Center go to the top. The view is great and my DD, 10 and her friend loved it. We also went to Ellen's Stardust Diner to eat and they had a blast. If you want to walk about to more blocks the World of disney store is there.

Thanks, is rockerfeller center in walking distance from AGP? If so we will definately go, I forgot about world of Disney we will definately walk there, is the Toys R Us close enough to that area?

What is Ellens Stardust Diner and what other cool places are there that the tween set would like?

Thanks - I am starting to get excited and less nervous!

Rockefeller Center is only about a block or maybe 2 from the American Girl Store. Ellen's Stardust Diner is a few blocks uptown and another block further in from American Girl. Both are an easy walk.

One recommendation for Ellen's.....it can get rather crowded just before theater time. I am not sure what day of the week you are going, but Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday can be crazy with Matinee's at the theaters. If you want to sit downstairs at Ellen's and really experience the singing waitstaff it is best to go at a slightly off time or be prepared to wait for a downstairs seat. Upstairs is okay if you are seated on the railing, but the rest of the upstairs is just an ordinary diner experience.

Also regarding American Girl. Be sure to make reservations for the theater show. It is very popular and often sells out. Same goes for the Cafe at the store. If you want to eat there, reservations are a must.

Thanks Linda -

I have reservations for the theater at AGP and unfortunately can't get a cafe reservation but I am going to keep trying just in case of a cancellation.

We are in town on a Wednesday, so if we tried for an early dinner at the Diner say 5 - 5:30 do we have a shot? Can you make a reservation?

Any other fun dining experiences we can look for just in case we can't get AG or the Diner? I have been googling but its hard to figure out where things are in comparsion to where we will be and what is good for the 9-11yo set.
