Once you bank DVC points how long are they good for?

Can they stay banked indefinitely or do you have a certain time to use them? I am brand new to DVC so I appreciate your advice. TIA!

They must be used for a trip that takes place during the use year into which they have been banked, and if not use during that use year, they expire. They cannot be banked a second time.

Drusba is right. Let me give you some examples.

My use year is April. I have 10 points from 2012 that I banked at the end of that year. So this "use year", I have 70 points, 10 that I banked, and 60 current points. We're taking a trip that will cost 68 points this year. I've booked that trip, and banked the remaining two points. In 2014, I will have 62 points available.

When you use points, your banked points will always be used first, so you rarely have to worry about whether or not you're going to use the points you banked. The only time that really comes into play is if you banked points from the previous year, and do not plan to travel this year at all. The points you banked will be lost, and you can bank your current use-year's points.

Using the previous example, say I wasn't going to take that trip this year. I can bank the current year's 60 points, but the previous 10 points I banked will be forfeited. In 2014, I will have 120 points available.

As mentioned, it will extend their use for one additional UY..however, when making reservations, you would always want to use banked points first and then could bank that year's points, so in essence, you could be carrying extra points for years...they would just not be the same points.

Of course, this does require travel during the UY where banked points reside...if you didn't, then you would lose them...

Borrowing moves the points to 1 UY earlier, they expire at the end of the new UY.

Banking moves the points to 1 UY latter, the points expire at the end of the new UY.

Points can only be banked or borrowed once but the other original points in any given UY can be banked or borrowed.

Banking and borrowing are final transactions and can not be undone.

Thank so much! I appreciate all of the responses. :)
I guess if I wasn't going to use them for some reason, I could always rent them out, but I am not sure if a small number of points rents as well as a larger number. I guess I will figure that out if the problem ever arises. :)

Typically you need a fairly largish (to me, anyway) number of points to be able to rent them out through a service. I think the minimum in many places is around 90 or so.

Well before there was a minimum postings or fee charges, I rented points for one night stays three times...so people do look for small number of points sometimes...or you could transfer them.
