I believe DCL policy says you must be 18 or older to use the gym onboard. Have you had any experience with getting exceptions to this policy? My son will be 17 years 10 months when we sail. I will not be letting him go without DCL authorization, I am just trying to determine if there is a chance.

He spends 8-10 hours a week in gyms here, so he knows his way around the equipment and how to behave in the gym, but rules are rules…

Ages 14-17 can use the gym as long as an adult accompanies him/her/them. Taken directly from DCL. It does state that this is for U.S. departures. U.K. departures require a minimum age of 18 for some reason. Other foreign ports are not addressed that I can find?

DCL is very strict when there is an age limit involved. It's a completely objective metric - no judgment so you can't say that someone got better treatment than you. If it says 18, it's 18, not 17 and 364 days.

When we cruised the Kids Club had one hour in the gym one day of a seven day cruise. It is odd that a cruise line that caters to children doesn't have some time set aside everyday for those under 18.
My son was on his High School Baseball team and he hoped to get some workout time in since Baseball practice started 2 days after we got back, but he couldn't.

On US departures I took my son all the time. I believe your son could just go or you could walk him in stay for your own workout and leave if you wanted.

I don’t know how strict rules are for non US based departures.

On the Wonder in December, my 15 year old was allowed to use the gym but only with a parent, not just accompanied by an adult. They went over this with me multiple times that a parent/guardian responsible for the minor must be the one to accompany and stay with the minor at all times in the gym. Of course, when we went to the gym on day 2, no one even looked up when we walked in and there were no cast members in the gym - just 4 or 5 other people using equipment.

So if I get his sister, who will be in the same cabin, declared his guardian…

Ummm…no. I am not sure anyone will believe she is older than he is, let alone his guardian. He may just have to skip a week of gym time.
