Onboard booking question

I am currently booked on a cruise in November of 2017. The next one I wanted to do was in 2018 and I noticed the class of cabin I wanted had only a few cabins left. After that class the next one up puts me over budget. So I spoke to my TA and asked them to reserve me one of those cabins. Now I have a deposit down for that 2018 cruise.

Has anyone been in this situation and gotten onboard for their next cruise and been able to swap that future cruise to get the onboard discount? If not I figure I could book a placeholder, get off the ship and call TA to cancel the original and move the placeholder to the cruise I would have just cancelled.

You can reshop any cruise. Just be prepared to pay a new deposit as it's a new reservation.

HOWEVER. A couple of possible situations...

1) The category could sell out before you cruise meaning you'd have to book in a different category. Now, you could always book it in the new category and then have your travel agent work to change things after the fact. But no guarantees s/he would be able to do it.

2) The category is available and you rebook in that category. However, given that you have used a travel agent, it's not going to be as simple as if you did it on your own. If you'd booked it on your own, the desk agent could put you briefly in one cabin to book the reservation and then change you right then. But since you used a travel agent, you'll have to book in a completely different cabin, then when you get home (or I guess if you're using shippernet you could email her/him) contact the agent and have them cancel the first reservation and move you into the selected cabin. You will DEFINITELY have to pay a new deposit here as you'll have two reservations until the agent gets the first one cancelled.

I'll also point out, you can go ahead and book whatever category you want. And, while you can "reshop" it once onboard, you'll be looking at taking the discounts/perks on the current price, you can't apply it to the price you've already booked the room at.

That's why, technically, if it works out better to do the onboard booking, you must cancel the current reservation and make a new one (at the prevailing price).
