This is our first time staying as a dvc member and have been reading where people get an upgrade at check-in. Was wondering is that something you ask for or will they automatically do that for you as a courtesy if there is availability? Just wondering how it works, thanks for any help you may be able to give!!!

The only time I have heard of upgrades happening is if the room type someone has booked is not available, due to some maintenance issue (or perhaps due to overbooking). It doesn't matter what might be available, if the room category someone has booked is available that's the room that's assigned.

If you want an upgrade, you need to reserve that upgrade using your points. They seldom if ever happen on points stays for no extra points involved.

Cash Guests have a much better chance of getting an upgrade. Upgrades with DVC are almost unheard of.

The only way you'll get an upgrade at a DVC resort is if the room you're assigned is uninhabitable, and there are no other villas available in the category you booked.

In other words, you'd have about as much chance of hitting the lottery.

BTW, upgrades are rare at non-DVC resorts, too. There's this misconception that fabulous upgrades can be had just by asking. That's not the case.
