On or off site???

We've done both and, if the cost is virtually the same, it's a tough call. Our offsite stays have been in condos at Windsor Hills and our onsite have varied - we've done All Star Music and Movies, CBR, and WL. Some things to consider:

At Windsor Hills
-- The drive to and from the park was not bad at all. We've done it in mid-Oct and late June - very quick and easy both times.
-- We rented 2 different condos from the same company and the people we dealt with were great. But, while both condos were nicely decorated and the furniture was pretty comfy, they were not outfitted equally in terms of towels, dishes, hangers, etc. That may sound like a small issue but it turned out to be a major pain - we were constantly having to do laundry and dishes so we'd be ready for the next meal or bath time. There were days that we had to adjust our park touring to accommodate doing the laundry. So little details like that can impact your experience more than you might think.
-- If you stay in a house or condo, you'll most likely have to do some housework before you leave. We've always been required to at least wash all the towels and dishes, strip the beds and leave the sheets in the washer, clean out the fridge and take out all trash. That may not sound like much but keep in mind that this is in addition to repacking all your stuff and loading it into your car. Depends on how much junk you take (I'm a heavy packer) but it can be quite a bit of work.
-- One of the reasons we chose the condo for our last trip was to save money by making full use of the kitchen. While it was nice having some homecooked meals, we ended up spending more time at the condo than I would have liked and less time making use of those very expensive park passes. I also spent more time than I cared to doing grocery shopping and, as mentioned above, doing dishes and cleaning the kitchen. So if I do offsite again, I'd probably just use the kitchen for quick meals we could grab and take with us (sandwiches and such) and as a place to store and warm up leftovers from restaurants.

If you stay onsite
-- Since you said you're driving, you'll have the option of using Disney transportation or driving yourselves to the park. Onsite guests don't have to pay for parking at the parks and you'd still have the option of splitting up if needed. Just make sure someone remembers to drive the car back to your resort.;)
-- No.Housework.At.All. 'Nuff said. (Can you tell I didn't care for doing housework on my "vacation"?)
-- Most resorts have plenty of food options right there just steps from your room. We LOVE the foodcourts. In my family, everybody always wants something different. We never seem to all want the same kind of food at the same time. With a foodcourt right there, this is no problem. Everybody can pick what they want.

It really is a very personal decision - there are so many variables to consider. But I hope this helped some.

Coming from a family that has stayed offsite 5 straight years, all things being equal, I would stay onsite. We are usually offsite mainly due to cost, we get a room 3 times as big for 1/3 of the Disney cost.

Another difference is are you doing an Orlando vacation or a Disney vacation?

With children of 3 and 5, stay onsite, enjoy things, but I would personally drive to the parks. We are another family that can verify midday waits of over an hour for a bus that never came.

I really appreciate everyone's opinions. You have given me more things to consider (like I needed to be more indecisive). If we could stay deluxe for the same price it would be a no brainer.

I would go offsite. I could get 2 bedroom suite with a free breakfast. More than one TV. Kids and adults can't share. LOL :lmao::lmao:

More cheap restaurants to choose from. I think WDW is lacking in the dining department. When I have make AR 6 months in advance no thank you. I like plain American food and nothing fancy.

Don't have wait for a bus. I waited last summer to come for DTD for 45 minutes and never came.

Did mention more room to spread out.

Yes I have stay onsite to.

The hotels stay offsite are :

Fairfield Inn on Canada Avenue
Hawthorne Suites Canada Avenue.

I am looking into the SpringHill Suites on Universal Blvd for this year. Or the Sea World Springhill Suites. Both get good reviews on tripadvsior.com

We have done both on and off site and for our family we prefer on site. Would we stay off site to save money - if need be yes.

On sit gives us more transportation flexibility so we can split up as a group. Something with two kids so far apart in age that you might seriously desire to do.

Also, on site means someone else makes the beds, cleans the bathroom, supplies the towels, and takes out the trash...and that is really, really nice. Having those services really adds to the vacation for me, so we prefer a hotel room.

Good luck on the decision making. Only you can know if space matters most to the quality of your vacation.

We prefer off-site. We get 2 bedroom condos and really enjoy spreading out and the full kitchen.

I have done my pricing comparisons and have figured that I can stay off site (Windsor Hills) for about the same price as in a moderate (CSR) - this is taking into account free dining for on site. Anyway, I CANNOT decide. I have two kids - aged 3 & 5. We would be taking a break in the afternoons. Here's my pros/cons for each:

PROS:
Stay onsite - transportation to/from parks - this is the biggest pro I see for onsite, delivery of purchases to room, dining plan (although my figures for offsite includes significant dining on site), EMH
Stay offsite - more room, kitchen (which could be a con), laundry facilities, a place to get away

CONS:
Onsite - hotel room & one bathroom, would rather stay Deluxe, being at WDW 24/7
Offsite - transportation to/from parks, cost of onsite meals.

Now I realize I COULD do offsite for less than onsite but want to do the character meals.

So, what would YOU do considering they would both be about the same price. I just cannot decide.

Editing to add that we would be driving so we would have a car. Also, my price comparison is for all meals with the onsite meals being free.

TIA

Is it possible for you to do a split stay. A couple vacations we stayed off-site for several days to save money then switched to on-site for 2-3 nights. This worked out great as we felt we had the on-site vacation and saved a lot of money in addition to visiting the beach, outlets, grocery etc.

That would be a good compromise - then we could get the dining package for a few days, which would be plenty. Also, we could probably afford to stay deluxe!!

Would off site be best first or last? I would like to say first but then how would that work with park tickets? On the other hand, we would go during free dining and would go the latest we could in October to take advantage of that so then we would be staying on site first.

Hey guys, thanks a lot for the great insight and advise about this subject. I have always just assumes that offsite was a better value, but I can see that there are other things to consider.

D

Onsite no doubt about it! No driving or parking, never leaving the magic!:goodvibes
Free dining is great! Certainly would be cheaper than eating offsite. We really don't think it's that expensive onsite anyway, I hear people complain all the time, but we have King's Island around here and Subway cost $14.00!

Driving and parking is better than waiting in a 45 min line just to get to and from the park IMO

O.K. here's the deal...... My mom and Dad work for Marriott Hotels and I could get a pretty decent discount on a hotel room $39/night and $129/night for two bedroom suite, but i am still opting for the Cabins @ Ft. Wilderness :confused3
I have never been to WDW and kind of want the whole experience!!!
IDK, what do you think?

Oh and as for the car rental I also have a cousin that works for Enterprise;)

You might get a better response if you started a new thread with more information (like your dates, size of your family, etc) instead of piggy-backing off of this one. Right now I don't know enough to give you adequate advise :).

Offsite- villas are GREAT......ask our kids their memories are more of the villa's hot tub and pool then of Disney. We don't like to do Disney every day or even every trip though.....just love the climate......the shopping.....other attractions around. I also prefer to cook our own food (not 100% of the time!) and have no problems with the clean up and cooking at the villas....somehow it seems fun and grocery shopping is so different there for us too. Like someone mentioned though we have learned all the questions to ask......it is awful having a villa that is not well stocked...one time there were 10 of us and 10 towels....that did not work out as most of us women anyway need 2 plus some for at the pool.....then same place we needed to buy some plastic spoons...think there was maybe 6 in the drawer- the villa owners just did not keep up( also had signs we were to leave only ONE load of laundry or would be charged $50 this is very hard to do when you have an early morning flight and a whole family of sheets and towels).......now others have been amazing with enough sets of dishes for the villa and plasticware for the pool and pillows and blankets in unbelievable amounts! The one condo we were at did not have one pan you could put in the oven.....not one not a casserole dish/broiler pan/cookie sheet to be found......kept the oven clean I guess- I just wanted to cook some fries and chicken fingers......bought a foil pan!

thanx so much for the replies guys, very helpful. I have started a new thread BTW under budget board, same question, just thought you would like to know!;)

We do the off-site first but already have tickets. If you are buying them from Disney with your package you must do Disney first.

The past 2 years, we have stayed off-site (Lake Buena Vista Resort Village and Spa) and LOVED it. The cost was much cheaper than on-site, unless we stayed in a value which we did not want to do. Our kids are little too, and we liked having a "suite" so they each had their own rooms and could get good naps and good sleep at night. We also had a FULL stocked kitchen, 2 bathrooms, and a washer and dryer in our room. Made things so easy for us.

2 years ago, we drove.. last year, we flew and rented a car. It only took between 5-10 min each day to get to any of the parks. We did not find it inconvenient at all.

All that being said, this year we are staying on-site just because we got a great PIN and we want to try it out. I am definitely going to miss all of the space, privacy, and comforts of home that we had off-site though!
