so, i'm new iwth chase visa and i guess they've been giving us 5% on dining and department stores.

So for january 2012, this stops and it's gas and ?

Just checking because if the dining and shopping stops ... I'm not using the card.

:)

The Chase Freedom categories for Jan-Mar are gas stations and amazon. Don't forget, you do have to activate it each quarter to get the 5%.

I am going to use the card this quarter for my gas purchases. 5% cash back on every gallon of gas - works for me. Any discount on gas helps. :)

mrspaha is correct, you have to activate the 5% each quarter in order to earn it.

You guys can earn an extra 10% in points if you have a checking account at Chase, too.

Does anyone feel that the categories/timing is bad this year? I feel like we had no problem hitting the $1500 max spend in the 5% categories in previous years, but there is no way I will be able to do it this quarter with only Amazon and Gas. Looking forward to the groceries quarter, that will be a sure thing!

i agree. Tbh, I'm not using it this quarter. I can do better with other cards.

:thumbsup2

Amazon feels to me like a merchant, not a category.

Maybe next quarter it will be Aldo shoes, Applebees and JC Pennys.

I called about the extra 10% when i got my card and called to activate it. The person i spoke with had no idea what i was talking about. Do u need to go into a CHASE bank? i do have a chase checking account. Please let me know how i would activate this for the Chase Freedom - thanks

I completely agree with this. If it had been Amazon last quarter, I would have maxed it out with all my Christmas shopping. This quarter not so much. Plus I work from home, so I don't buy a lot of gas.

The 10% bonus is for Freedom card holders who also have a Chase checking account. You don't have to activate it, it's automatic. I suggest you visit your local branch and speak to a banker, they can explain it all to you, and review your profile to make sure you're activated for all the sweepstakes that are offered, your checking and credit cards are in the same profile, and you're getting all the other advantages.

Yes, I'm a banker for Chase, in case anyone's wondering. Good bankers will always try to save you money, so don't be afraid to go in and talk to one.

Is the 10% on ALL purchases or just the bonus categories for the quarter?
Thanks!

ALL Purchases.
Your Freedom will earn 1% (1pt/dollar) + 10pts per purchase + add'l 4% in bonus categories (if activated for the quarter) + 10% bonus points (if checking customer).

doesn't the chase checking account come with all sorts of fees though?

Not necessarily. There's many packages, and many different ways to waive the fees. That's why it's best to meet with your local banker and discuss how you do your banking and use your funds so they can explain what will fit you best, along with any fees or ways to waive them.

Just checking in on you guys.... Did everyone meet with their banker and get their stuff straightened out? Any more questions?

Turns out I was already getting those extra points. I have only had this credit card for a couple months, and I didn't really look at the points part of the statement. Now that I checked I am getting those points.

We had the Chase rewards card that gave us 5% on grocery, gas station and drug stores for years. Every time we got the notice that they were changing it to the freedom card we called and said we wanted to keep the old plan and until a couple months ago, they always let us keep the old card. I'm just getting used to the new card. I liked the old card better because I didn't always have to wonder which category was 5% this quarter since it was always the same.
