The new on board credits that can be purchased for yourself or others going on a Disney cruise, is this a use it or lose scenario? Use it all or lose whats left? And can you place Disney gift cards onto your stateroom before sailing? If so, are those refundable if not all spent?

This isn't really new. I guess you could say the "new" part is that it's now listed on the site. You could always put money on your account before your cruise. You can put gift cards on your account and if you don't spend it all, the amount left will go back on the gift card. Also if you get a lot of gift cards, you should combine them into one card(up to $1000), otherwise they put whatever amount was on each card back onto each individual card. Keep your gift cards until the end of your cruise in case you don't spend it all.

Oh ok. Ya I had no idea, but I am really wondering if these "credits" you buy through Disney are refundable? I am thinking that there is nothing more than what the mouse would love more is for someone to not spend their total and it not get returned. I could be wrong on this, so I am just wondering.

I've put money on my account for years, have always gotten refunds when we didn't use it all. We have a cruise coming up, I just put some money our account last week, using a gift card. The cm helping me told me to keep the card in case I got a refund. Hope that helps.

Right, they will refund your money you put down. But I have a feeling that if Aunt Susie were to surprise you with a $500 on on board credit and you spent $494 of it, the $6 that was left would go back to the mouse. Not sure how anyone could not spend all of their credit, but I feel like Disney is really hoping some might not. Thus the new creation of selling of on board credits.

Wait. How do you put it on your account or buy it prior to sailing? Where is the button to do that located in the web site? I’m flush with GC and was going to head to guest relations, but if I can skip the visit, so much the better.

It's under onboard gifts on DCLs site.

Hadn't thought about it when someone else buys it for you. I would assume they would refund the amount to the person who bought it for you, either to their CC or GC if that's what they used. Humm, may call and ask.

Betcha it goes back into the mouse's pockets, lol. I could be wrong, but would be very surprised if I were. But I can't ever imagine any sane person not spending it all.

I think the only “non-refundable” OBC is that received directly from DCL or maybe TAs. If you don’t use all the credited from Aunt Susie, it will be refunded to her method of payment. I do not believe they will give it to you, though, if purchased by someone else.

Enjoy your cruise!

The cards I've received in my stateroom showing the OBC amounts had the OBC from my TA marked as refundable. Although, I'm quite sure that would be refundable to them, not to me. I've never had a case where I didn't use up all my OBC so I can't speak from direct experience on that.

The amount of the credit that isn't used will be returned to the person/card that made the payment. My parents gave my husband and I some onboard credit for our anniversary one year, and we did not use it all, they recieved refund of the difference abourt 2 weeks later.

Had a similar experience. We put credits onto my niece's account based on activities that were planned. Then the cruise went from FL/Bahamas to Canada and there were no planned excursions through DCL (bye bye cabana!). So the extra amount that had been put on account prior to sailing (this is not a "new" thing, you and others have always been able to gift onboard credits to yourself or others) was refunded afterward (we had even prepaid gratuities so there was no charge to the onboard account for those). It turned out to be a few hundred dollars and we got the refund pretty promptly.

So no, this isn't a scam DCL is trying to pull to get extra revenue. This isn't even a DCL thing, you can gift onboard credits with most cruise lines.

I wonder if buying it for yourself with your Disney Visa gets you the 0% - i.e., the purchase counts as part of the cruise "package".

I think much money gets unused because of gift cards, and the money stays with the issuing company. It’s up to everyone to be good consumers.

That's a good question. I know that pre-paying gratuities or placing on-board credit at (or before) the time of final payment counts for the 0% interest-free offer, because I've done that. I think I've heard that calling to place money on your onboard account after final payment but before the cruise also counts. However, I am fairly sure that buying items to be delivered on the ship (such as a birthday celebration package) does not.

We'll have to wait for someone who has purchased onboard credits online with a Disney Visa to report back on whether it counted as part of a vacation package.

Yes, anything you purchase before sailing qualifies for the 0%. I've used my Disney Visa to purchase OBC and Rainforest Room day passes ahead of my cruise and both were listed in the 0% section of my statement.

If done in advance of the cruise using the Disney Visa, yes you get the 0% interest free repayment period.
