On board credits and limits on kids cards

Can someone explain how the on board credits that you can buy from DCL work? Are you issued some type of voucher that shows the amount of your credit or is it applied to your account? Can you buy them while you're paying for cruise or do you have to wait until the cruise is paid in full? Are they refundable?
Is it possible to have a spending limit placed on a childs KTTW card?

I'm working on our 10 day Magic Cruise. After making the deposit I want to send a set amount each month. I had plan to buy DD to used for our on board spending but then I found out about the on board credit, however I not sure how it works. I really do not want to have a huge CC bill when the trip is over.


I'm not booking the cruise with DCL, I just want to use them to buy the credits.

If you go to guest services when you get on board you can see your credits. There is no way - right now- to put a limit on the kids cards, it is either all or nothing.... sorry!
